Because they don't even know what Tech is.
Secondly, Nigerian loves anything that trends.

It happened with stocks
Then they moved to forex.
Then it HYIPs like MMM
Then "tech."

And basically 98% of those Nigerians you see posting on LinkedIn that they are into tech don't even know what tech is. Simply because they can do one job for a lazy secretary in Canada and get paid $1500, which gives them a strong spending value in Nigeria, they go around, buy fancy things, and think that they are into tech.

Now let me explain tech for those who really want to go into tech:
Tech is not being able to type "def function()" in Python and arrange a dataframe with graphs as well. Excel can do almost everything that we call tech if that is the only thing we know as tech.
True tech is being able to apply a new computer-based method to your specialization. Take note of the word "specialization." Meaning that if you don't have a specialization, you are not into tech. You are just floating around and waiting for the next trend. You only apply it effectively to a field you are a specialist in, or you specialize to apply it. Either one of the two.

It is not just about designing "fintech apps" with drag and drops.
You just used lengthy words to say nothing.

It’s just the Nigerian mentality. Once they hear or see that a particular business, skill or job fetches food money, many will rush into it.
Exactly. Most of the students finish these tech courses with no idea what next to do.

Tech field is not the issue, it is not dependent on availability of jobs but more of creative problem-solving, and money flows into that.

The issue is the sweet talking half-baked overnight trainers who saw opportunities in the training side. They frustrate students and their sponsors with their lies. You can't give what you don't have.

While direct onsite training is preferred by many, the best path to eliminate fakery is a deep dive into time tested online training. However, a good training school with real mentors moves you closer to your goals much faster.

At this age an time you still ask dumb questions!

Tech is taking over every industry, you dont have to quit your job to get into tech.

If you like de sleep there

That's what most people don't get. They see tech as able to conjure algorithm to create a function. Even in that your carpentry you can engage TECHnology that will make your carpentry process seamless.

Everyday i see different advices on twitter encouraging everybody to go learn a tech skill
We graduate about 500,000 young Nigerians every year, imagine all of them going into coding, UI/UX, data analysis etc.. which country will absorb all of them, because definitely no company in Nigeria will absorb 2% of that?

We seriously need jobs in this country
We can't continue adapting .
AI is even poised to take most of these tech jobs. I have never written a single line of code again since the day I tried it with chatgpt. Now I just instruct grok or chatgpt and everything comes out perfect.in some cases maybe a few adjustments.
Is it the fault of the government or the citizens are not learning skills?

With AI slated and even beginning to wipe out a lot of entry level tech jobs, the global consensus is that tech isn't really the hot cake it used to be. That field is already very competitive. With just a simple prompt in Gemini, it gave me the code for an app that randomly generates numbers following a set pattern. It even offered a number of other features that I found useful.

I think cloud and DevOps still holds good prospects though. But DevOps isn't for everyone. I think that's the most frustrating aspect of tech. But the money is good from what I hear. A friend who moved to the UK years ago specialized in DevOps and from what he showed me, last year he saved close to 500 million naira after tax. He is quite sort after and travels all over the world. It took him 8 years to get there and he plans to retire this year at 42.

He encourages young folks who have a passion for tech to go into it but they need to be very intentional about it. In 10-15 years just about every aspect of tech will be AI dominated but cloud technologies still hold bright and vast potentials for anyone willing to put in the level of work ethic and dedication required.
Currently, people smile about vibe coding.

Vibe DevOps will immediately result in PREMIUM TEARS grin

Here's why it will continue to be a govt problem

For every 2 term tenure(8years) of a president, over half a million are graduating annually. That puts the figures of 8years at about 5 to 6m graduates.

In retrospect, the government is barely creating jobs for 30,000 graduates per year. That's barely 300,000 jobs for over 6,000,000 graduates.

I know not all graduates are good enough but if we cut those ones off, the jobs are still not enough for the good graduates.

Party loyalists are champions of screaming the "Learn a skill" noise every blessed day so the burden can fall on the private sector. But the very graduates in millions are now having to be in the same room with the uneducated and partially educated who are even 5× the graduates popular per year. Rem we have to factor in location where jobs can easily pop up and pay is good. This alone makes cities like Abuja, Lagos, PH, Aba, Ibadan, Borno to be loaded with artisans all competing for the few available slots to earn a daily wage at work sites.

If you add how useless the currency gets daily, and the ever constant desperation expressed through cheating and stealing from employers, and then the low quality of job done, you'll see why the larger blame will never ever shift from the government.

Is like many dunno how concentrated many fields are because Nigerian youths are loaded and eager to earn something to not rely on anybody. Before graduation, we see the increase of entrepreneurs among university students doing 4 to 5 different trades with their studies to survive. They come out of that and try to continue but government policies and the harsh environment and saturated field makes it hard.

Now lets add the low purchasing power of those expected to demand for such goods and services and we see why the buck lies on the government.

It took barely 7years for Nigerian youths to flood the tech field. Same way it took barely 6 years for the same youths to turn Master's Degree to something so common it barely makes a difference in many formal rooms in Nigeria. Even those that got their abroad still have to compete as well with the home based

In conclusion, let's just sincerely say this

220m Nigerians are existing daily with NO GOVERNMENT

To see genuine efforts that encourage is a pipe dream from them. Even the Elites are groaning.

OP should add this comment to his topic.

The popularity is currently driven by trainers who lure people into paying for their courses.

And that's even where the money is - Selling the courses!

Wait on the sidelines and watch everyone take mouthwatering job roles. Don’t adapt to times. Keep waiting for opportunities to fall on your lap.

I will always preach it, this forum is full of unserious individuals. You can tell by what they type.
The fact that they don't understand doesn't make them “unserious individuals ”; you don't have to be rude while communicating.

The thing is that tech can absorb so many people because it's an enabler - it's used to drive other industries. But tech is most likely experiencing its last boom before artificial intelligence renders techies useless.

I'm forecasting this will happen in the next 15 - 20 years. AI research labs are now paying their workers handsomely because those employees are building projects that will take their place. Some pay as high as $150 per hour while others pay $500k per annum.
AI is also tech bro. AIs are not aliens. Tech people create AIs . The only thing is certain tech jobs will be handled by AIs created by same tech in the same tech eco system. Na the same family dem be.
