kakameks:Update: So I noticed something. Where I usually park overnight, it requires me to reverse out of my compound onto the street first before engaging the forward gear, and if a car happens to be passing it usually have to wait awhile before the forward gear slowly engage. So I now reverse park so that I don't have to reverse first thing in the morning. However I now notice a significant reduction in the delay in the car moving forward when I engage drive! Noticed this for 4 consecutive days and I have continued this parking method, hopefully the delay will stop in it's entirety. What do you guys make of this? Will still go for a r tranny scan as soon as I can located a place that does it. |

kakameks:Scan and post codes, check transmission fluid colour and level. You should also check the transmission sump for impact. |

Good evening, my RX 350 AWD, I parked it down for a year, when I eventually start up, the gear jerks and makes a clunking sound so much when changing, Oil was replaced immediately and the jerking / clunking sound reduced drastically. Now it changes smoothly but makes a little clunking sound when entering only the first gear while on transit. Other gear changes smoothly. Please help. |

tempest12:Have you scanned? What year us the RX350? If its 22pin, use a scan tool to try and reset the gearbox. |

tempest12:Good evening sir, Thank you for explaining the situation clearly. From your description — Lexus RX 350 AWD that was parked for about a year, initial harsh jerking and clunking during gear changes, transmission oil replacement reducing the severity, and a remaining clunk only when engaging 1st gear while in motion — this is a post-storage + driveline adaptation issue, not a failed transmission. Also, for future reports, always include the year of the vehicle, mileage (if possible), — it helps narrow causes faster and saves time. ⸻ 🔧 Professional Diagnostic Insight 1️⃣ Long-Term Parking Effects on Drivetrain (Primary Factor) When a vehicle is parked for up to a year: • Transmission clutch packs partially drain • Torque converter fluid balance is lost • Engine, transmission, and differential mounts stiffen or partially collapse • AWD transfer case components dry out internally Once driven again, initial harsh engagement is common, and fluid replacement often reduces it — exactly what you experienced. ⸻ 2️⃣ Remaining Clunk When Entering 1st Gear (Key Focus) Since: • Other gears now shift smoothly • The clunk happens only when entering 1st gear while in transit This points to: • Slight driveline slack take-up • Engine or transmission mount wear • AWD transfer case or front differential backlash • ECU still re-learning shift pressure after long inactivity This is mechanical play being taken up, not internal gearbox damage. ⸻ 3️⃣ AWD System Contribution (Often Overlooked) On RX 350 AWD models: • The transfer case and front differential engage more aggressively in low gears • Any worn mount or dry coupling will be felt most in 1st gear This is why the symptom disappears in higher gears. ⸻ 4️⃣ Why Oil Change Helped but Didn’t Fully Eliminate It Fresh ATF: • Restored hydraulic pressure • Improved clutch engagement timing However, fluid cannot fix mounts, driveline play, or relearning adaptation — so a mild clunk can remain. ⸻ ⚙️ Ryan Automotive Workshop – Professional Take This is not a failing transmission and not a reason for panic or overhaul. What you’re experiencing is typical after long-term parking, especially on AWD Lexus RX platforms, and is usually resolved with: • Proper mechanical inspection • Mount correction • ECU relearning —not parts replacement guessing. ⸻ ✅ Professional Summary & Correct Next Steps To resolve this properly, we recommend: ✔️ Engine & transmission mount inspection ✔️ AWD transfer case and front differential check ✔️ Driveline joint inspection (axles & prop shaft) ✔️ Transmission adaptation relearn (scan tool) ✔️ Verification of correct ATF type and level (hot & cold) Avoid aggressive launches for now — gentle driving allows the system to normalize further. 📍 Clients come to us from different locations — distance is never a barrier when the diagnosis must be done right. If you want this inspected properly and settled permanently, bring the vehicle in for professional evaluation. Ryan Automotive Limited Precision. Transparency. Excellence. My 2008 Camry 2.4L keeps throwing P0303 and P0172 codes. I've already swapped out the plugs, coils, and fuel nozzle, and an electrician checked the wiring, finding no issues. The engine idles rough and jerks at low speeds. When I unplug the coil wire for cylinder #3 while idling, there's barely any change in the RPM. My mechanic thinks it's an engine problem with cylinder #3. Have anyone encountered such issue before, I'm afraid of bringing the engine down. |
