19-Year-Old Boy Selling Waste to Buy Tiling Equipment Gets Help, Sheds Tears

Viral 19-Year-Old Waste Seller Gets ₦1m, ₦7.05m Donations, University Scholarship

A 19-year-old Nigerian teenager, Samuel, has received overwhelming support from Nigerians after a video showing him selling plastic waste and cartons to raise money for work tools went viral on social media.

In the widely shared clip, Samuel was seen lifting heavy bags of plastic waste and cartons at a recycling collection point. He explained that each bag earned him between ₦1,000 and ₦2,000, which he diligently saved in hopes of buying tools needed to practice his trade as a tiler. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Samuel disclosed that he learned tiling several years ago but had been unable to begin professional work due to the high cost of basic equipment. He listed the tools he needed to start properly as a cutting machine, mallet, pitches and knife.

He further revealed that his parents were unaware he had taken up waste collection, explaining that he resorted to the job solely to raise money for his tools.

The teenager’s determination caught the attention of popular TikTok content creator @bayuztvs, who approached him in the video to learn more about his story.

Moved by Samuel’s resilience, the content creator offered immediate assistance. Samuel was taken for a haircut, given new clothes and treated to a meal at a restaurant. He was also gifted one of the tiling tools he required, a new mobile phone and ₦50,000 in cash.

Overcome with emotion, Samuel broke down in tears, rolling on the floor as he expressed gratitude for the unexpected support. He also asked to see his mother during the emotional moment, a request that further touched viewers online.

In a follow-up visit, the content creator went to Samuel’s family home and met his mother, who was surprised with ₦1 million in cash. The family was also taken on a grocery shopping spree, where food items reportedly worth over ₦650,000 were purchased.

As the videos gained more traction, fans and supporters reportedly donated a total of ₦7.05 million to Samuel and his family. The donations were aimed at helping him fully establish his tiling business and improve the family’s living conditions.

In addition to the financial support, Samuel was awarded a scholarship up to university level, ensuring that he can pursue formal education alongside his vocational career.

The story has continued to inspire Nigerians online, with many praising Samuel’s work ethic and describing his journey as a reminder that diligence and perseverance can open unexpected doors.

Samuel is not 19 but 16. Fans of the donor (content creator) donated N8m apart from the initial N1m given to his mum and grocery shopping.

Nice one, I saw the video on Twitter yesterday and I was happy for him and his mother but the comments are disturbing.

There are millions of Samuels out there suffering on the streets of Nigeria. No help is in sight, no help will ever come, yet when we watched the video, we weren't angry at the politicians who failed. Instead, we preach hope and belief in God that one day it'd be our turn.

This is precisely the danger of the passive form of faith we practice in Nigeria

Once they see the child has made it, they will reappear to tell us they have been trying to reconnect since 1000 BC.

I’ve got things to say regarding this particular issue but let me just hold up on it..

But my point is that... Do not donate money to anybody online! If you’re feeling like helping anybody, visit the nearest market close to you, those mama wey dey sell pepper or little little things, gift them whatever you wanna gift physically. Help is help!

Never underestimate scammers! There’s something called a legit scam!

As I saw the video on TikTok, I knew it was all planned. Anybody can meet with a poor family then make some agreements with them, all for people to donate money! And guess what? You can never know the end point of money you donate online!

Nah them Europeans started this pattern. They’ll meet a poor man and donate cash to him! Before you know, they’ve opened Gofundme and you’ll be hearing $200,000 has been donated so far.... Nah lie o, they just wanna get people to donate money. A win-win situation for the scammer helper & the Helpee..

I’m sure as times goes on, people will realize this. But for now, the scope never really cast..

It is well. Hmm. May God send us all helpers.

But my view is this: how politicians, top civil servants, military bosses, electoral seniors like the chairman, zonal directors, professors that are used during elections, etc have destroyed Nigeria to this stage. This isn't only about IBB, Buhari, OBJ, Jonathan, Dazeni, Tinubu, Akpabio, Atiku, Obi, etc are thoae that have destroyed Nigeria. But almost all public office holders, politicians, etc have been destroyed Nigeria for over 5 decades.

Here is the result. People are helpless. They turned to God, and pastors, imams/alfas, and babalawos finished the destruction. Hmmmm. It is well oooo.

And then, yahoo boys started out of the desperation of the young Nigerians to make money. Hmmm!

So, I can only say that the set of young Nigerians who are comfortable are the ones with tech and trading skills. And before you know it, they are out of Nigeria. Not all skillful health workers are comfortable, so, those ones not happy are moving out daily as long as they can find jobs abroad. The opportunities are still there. The ones left here do not want to take up the challenge one way or the other. Most likely, they are tired of studying or are at the top here looting also.

To crown the whole wahala, boko haram and bandits chased farmers out of their farms. Of course, farming vegetables, fruits, and even raising livestock are profitable ventures, and one can use them to raise fund for major projects. But now, Nigerians have created an artifical barrier to entering these areas. Many young Nigerians cashed out before 2020 seriously. I know many who used their profit to buy or build houses, relocated abroad, or diversified into other businesses or investments (even many in this category sold their businesses or investments to japa)

So, this is the Nigerian story. It is well. May God help us all in this nation.
