How To Win The Award - Grammys CEO, Harvey Mason Jr by fergie001(op): 6:45pm On Feb 02
The Chief Executive Officer of the Recording Academy, Harvey Mason Jr., has explained how artists can win a Grammy Award, stressing that the process is driven solely by the votes of music professionals, not popularity or commercial success.

Speaking in a recent interview, Mason Jr. said many people misunderstand how Grammy winners are selected. According to him, the most important factor is the voting membership of the Recording Academy.

“First, you have to understand that the only way to win is to have the membership of the Academy vote for you,” he said. “To be a member of the Academy, you have to be a professional working in music in the United States, for now.”

He explained that once an artist’s work is submitted for consideration, Academy members listen to the music and judge it based on artistic quality alone. Sales figures, streaming numbers, chart performance and public hype do not influence the outcome.

“You are valued on the quality of your art,” Mason Jr. said. “Not the sales, not the streams, not how many songs, but purely on the opinion of the members.”

He also noted that the process is not easy and is often subjective. There is no external voting by record labels, journalists or fans. Instead, decisions are made strictly by music professionals who are active in the industry.

“It’s very hard because it’s subjective,” he added. “There is no label vote, there is no journalist vote. It’s purely music professionals.”

His comments come just after the conclusion of the 68th Grammy Awards, which held on February 1 at the Crypto .com Crypto.com we Arena in Los Angeles. The ceremony was hosted by comedian Trevor Noah, who marked his final appearance as host after leading the show since 2021.

This year’s event was also historic for the Recording Academy for another reason. The 2026 ceremony was the last Grammy Awards to air on CBS, which has been the show’s home network since 1973. From 2027, the Grammys will begin a new 10-year broadcast deal with Disney. The awards will air on ABC, with streaming available on Hulu and Disney+.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar, owned the night by emerging as the biggest winner for the second year in a row. Lamar won five awards on the night.

Among his major wins was Record of the Year for Luther, his collaboration with singer SZA. He also took home the award for Best Rap Album for GNX, adding to his long list of Grammy honours.

The ceremony also made history by recognising African music. Nigerian music icon Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was honoured with a posthumous award, becoming the first African artist to receive this particular recognition from the Recording Academy. The honour celebrated his lasting influence on global music and his role in shaping Afrobeat as a genre.

I challenge the man to make the process open, free, fair and transparent. This man cannot swear before Amadioha that there isn't more than voting at play.

This was how they used politics to deny 50 Cent of the award in his prime until he got frustrated and started calling them out. If streams and sales don't matter, then a bunch of oversabi fools are deciding who wins the awards.

This clarification from Harvey Mason Jr. is important for public understanding. Too often, fans assume that Grammy wins are based on popularity, streaming numbers, or sales, but the truth is that it’s a peer-driven process, decided by music professionals who evaluate artistic merit, creativity, and technical excellence.

The love we have for Davido does not automatically mean he deserves the award; admiration and fan support are different from the criteria used by the Recording Academy. Winning a Grammy requires recognition from fellow artists and industry experts, not just fan enthusiasm or commercial success
Re: How To Win The Award - Grammys CEO, Harvey Mason Jr by festacman(m):
The Grammy award decision is SUBJECTIVE. A small group of people gives you Grammy if majority of them likes your song or perhaps your face. Interestingly, none of them is fundamentally African.

And again, may be If you meet the 'whims and caprices' of some members of this Grammy 'mafia' or their associates, you get a thumb up. May be ...

This is rigged against Davido. But let him keep moving.

He ain't lying, he just didn't go into the details. Like when they told us as kids that dreams do come true... They never said the things we would need to do to make them come true but they're still right... Dreams do come true if you really really want it soooooo bad grin

I have said it that DAVIDO is fantastic but does his music please the ears of the majority African Americans and the Whites voters?
TYLA sings like a typical African American and that award is by them, for them and for their likes.
David should henceforth, stop stressing himself. It's not by large streams or media followership but by those who vote.
I don't know what that Tyla sings. On a Good day, I prefer Aryra & Davido but who am I when it comes to their award and its organizers ?

One of the greatest you mean to say as this is quite subjective and the addition of 'of all time' makes it look a bit weird, he's great for a period of time and necessarily for ages or time to come.

Simple and Simple.
It's an American Award and for those who sing like them. And they should stop distorting Africa with it. We are enjoying Diamond Platinumz, Davido and Kofi Olamide the way they are.
