“Very Unprofessional” – Omotola Jalade Slams Dancing Trend Used To Promote Movie by alphonsoolajide(op): 8:14am On Feb 05
Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade Ekeinde has stirred fresh debate within the Nigerian film industry after openly criticising the growing trend of using social media dance videos to promote movies.

Omotola shared her views during a recent interview on TVC Entertainment, where she made it clear that dancing should not be seen as a compulsory marketing strategy for films.

Speaking during the interview, the award-winning actress stated that she cannot bring herself to dance simply to sell a movie, describing the trend as unprofessional and inconsistent with how films should be marketed. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

I’m sorry, but I won’t be dancing to market or promote my movie. It’s not professional. I’ve done the movie, now I just have to go around and promote it,” she said.

According to Omotola, movie promotion should be handled through structured, deliberate, and professional channels, rather than relying on forced social media trends that may dilute the essence of the work.

Her comments come amid ongoing conversations in the industry following similar views expressed by filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, who has also criticised the pressure placed on actors and filmmakers to dance online as part of movie publicity.

Omotola’s position aligns with a growing sentiment among veteran creatives who believe storytelling, production quality, and strategic promotion should take precedence over viral gimmicks.

While some younger filmmakers argue that social media dances help movies reach wider audiences in today’s digital age, critics insist that such trends risk reducing serious cinematic works to fleeting internet content.

Omotola’s remarks have since sparked mixed reactions online, with some applauding her stance on professionalism, while others argue that adapting to evolving marketing tools is necessary for commercial success in Nollywood.

Different strokes for different folks..

We Africans often times, have this rigid mentality and always thinking that our way/method is the best. I remember when phone and internet came out newly, you would hear older generation be like "every time phone phone!" But today, between the older citizens and young, we don't know who presses phone more anymore. Again football, you might be speaking highly of CR7 or Messi and you would hear an older generation scornfully say "oh gone are those days of good football with Pele, Maradona and co, not this rubbish of today". They say same about music and everything...

In my opinion, Actors and filmmakers are free to use whatever works for them to market their films, so far it is legit and not against any morals. Moreover, singing and dancing are parts of art, therefore using them to gain publicity for your work is still within the framework of your profession as an artist.

I wonder how you'll dance to promote your movie if it's horror, thriller or a tragedy

Nothing wrong with dancing to promote your works but Funke Akindeke too overdo. You make your cast do countless dancing contents on top one movie and you will still collect monetisation proceeds from those contents o. Worst part of it is all that dancing does not even give you the slightest idea of what the movie is all about. Trailers and promotional tours are much better.

But let’s be real: some actors and filmmakers dance because it pays and gets attention in today’s social media-driven market.

You cannot argue with Omotola, she is the queen of the industry
Re: “Very Unprofessional” – Omotola Jalade Slams Dancing Trend Used To Promote Movie by Addme:
I totally disagree on this...
If you look at how these producers take loan to produce their movies and the aftermath of the loan, they will go to any length to promote their works.

Aunty Omotola, do what works for you, you'll not be their by the time banks start giving them pressure. Tell me if they know dancing or creating dance challenges will get them more sales and views, won't they do it to pay back loans.

Recently banks seized some properties belonging to Femi Adebayo because of loans.

Must you be this caustic and abrasive. If my knowledge is right, this is a woman who has university graduate as children. Haba, show respect small. Facelessness of social media is not enough reason to deny that we are Africans and Nigerians.[quote author=donleo92 :-post=138368416]Madam will you keep quiet 🤫!!!!!

I mean some of us understand the point of Kunle and Omotola. Funke has paid her dues and for her niche, she can promote as she deem fit as a producer; however that is not the standard. There are other creative and professional means that can be employed. No Omotola slander will be tolerated...

This justifies Kunle A==folayan's submission that he does not have the energy to dance around oromoting his movies.

When you know your onions and your your work speaks for themselves.

Madam, face front. The fact that you can’t do it doesn’t mean that you castigate those who can. Is it also professional for a Pilot to get married on a plane in flight? GenZ’s own 70% of the viewership market and anything legal to get their attention is allowed.

I wrote this on the other thread. Bovi had actually addressed this issue last year

SixSeven:
I totally agree with him. In fact, this is what made Bovi do in-person shows. He too said that he already has the craft, he has the product, those wey wan come and know the deal will come, he won't succumb to social media ridicule of this generation turning him to something else. That's why he went to Benin, Lagos and did his shows and said he won't do those crazy promotions online just to sell his tickets. If you notice, his show is so different, it doesn't have those insults, DJ mixes and noise the other comedians use to steal time and your money. Will people still go to those shows? Yes but the sky is big for everyone and that's what Kunle wrote in that proverb. Bovi further said he wanted to appreciate his original fans and removed those oppressive tables we use to extort ourselves in these comedy shows.

Afolayan is from the TK School of Works so I am not surprised with his mature comments. After some years, the work that was done for the art will speak louder than the work that was done for the fart money. Art is long, life is short.

Keep building your legacy Kunle. From the interviews I have watched of him and read, he understands the business angle of this industry and this last line means a lot if you want to put respect on your name and get your work's worth:

Listen to yourself guy.

She's not talking down on the people that do it. She simply air her view on the creativity of dancing to promote movie. She clearly doesn't buy the idea. That for her she would not follow the trend, dancing up and down for movie promotion. And she gave her reason for that.

If all you deduced from the post is that she talk down on people then you need to pray more for wisdom and knowledge.
