Africa’s military budgets reflect a mix of regional security challenges, geopolitical priorities, and economic capacities. As of the latest compiled estimates and defence spending trends, North African states dominate the top ranks, but sub-Saharan powers also play key roles in continental security planning. African defence spending remains a small share of global totals — but within the continent, strategic priorities and threats heavily shape budget decisions.Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2026/02/top-10-african-countries-by-military-budget-2026/#google_vignette

Kingray10:Convert $25b to naira and you will understand why Nigeria can't be the first or second in Africa. Our economy and the naira needs to strengthen for us to eliminate balance of trade deficit. Then we can increase education, health and defence budget. |

I cant imagine there was a time I was madly in love with Nigeria army as a child. When I heard from my father's discussion with some of his friends that Nigeria Army is ranked No. 1 on foot in the world. Then I was in primary 2 but I keep going to all the classes telling those who would pay me any attention. I dreamt of wearing that khaki. I even picked up lessons in karate. I was so good at it. Now when I see a soldier from Nigeria army I have absolute dislike for him. |

Being in the NA was once a respectable thing, now it is a total shame, along with the uselessness of our judicial system, uselessness upon uselessness. We are always on top when it comes to the wrong things. Who exactly are we preparing to go to war with? We can’t even defeat terrorists, bandits, or kidnappers operating openly within our own borders. Entire communities are under siege, highways are death traps, and citizens pay ransoms as a survival strategy. Yet we keep pouring money into “defence” as if we are a regional superpower facing an external enemy. Have we ever honestly compared our health, education, social welfare, or business support budgets with those same countries we love to mention? Countries spending more on their people than on empty military prestige? Our hospitals are glorified referral centres. Our schools are underfunded, overcrowded, and constantly shut down by strikes. Young people are unemployed, angry, and hopeless — the same conditions that produce bandits and insurgents in the first place. Instead of throwing billions at weapons we can’t effectively deploy, shouldn’t we be investing far more in education, rehabilitation, and economic opportunities? You don’t bomb insecurity out of existence when its roots are poverty, illiteracy, and state failure. Maybe what we really need is not more guns, but more classrooms. Not more defence votes, but more teachers, doctors, jobs, and functioning institutions. |

LivingTribunal:The money goes to pollitician pockets that's why Nigeria has so much insecurity yet spend so much on security than countries that aren't battling insecurity. They spend their money on more meaningful things that the avarage citizen enjoy |

israelmao:The insecurity in Nigeria is political based. If there is a political will, the FG can end it in one week. But the issue here is that the North sees this terrorists, bandits and kidnappers as there brothers and any attack on them would be seen as anti North. That's why the FG isn't going all out to eliminate them but been diplomatic about it. My problem here is that, even if the present government decimate the terrorists and one day a Northern person gets back to power, they would be resurrected again. |

decatalyst:What has currency rate got to do with this for God sake? Gambia Dallasi during our time there was D10 to $1 yet have nothing. Strong currency does not fully translated to economy buoyancy, ok. Ghana with heir yeye Dollar Cedis shit yet they are owing Nigeria Elctricity money in millions of Dollars. In Accra today the money you wll use to buy 1 bottled water will buy a pack of bottle water in Nigeria per exchange so to what usefulness is their strong Cedis shit when low class people can't afford bothle water people buy anyhow in Nigeria? Pls tay on course of the topic don't digress it. |
