You guys need to come together and carry out load assessment in each person's flat or room. You have to lookout for water heater, electric iron and electric cooker.
Na those appliances dey drink energy

It's obvious one or more of you guys are using maybe hotplate or something higher.

You need to investigate this and be sure.

You might need to stop buying gas so that all of you will be on same page.

I don't like cheating!

I don't think the landlord forced them to stay in his house. Also getting prepaid meters can be quite hard.
Bro you Dey right but no one is supposed to share prepaid meter with another person..I’ll never get a house with shared prepaid meter..

You people can install sub meters. It's sold in the market. With that, everyone get to use exactly what they paid for.
information is powerful never knew this kind meter is available, already saw it on jumia.imagine one meter to the 4 flats in my compound. Thanks for this info.

It's simple, install the reader for each room, it will monitor what each room is using and at the end you pay accordingly.

we have been on band A ever since
If you are using just bulb and fan, why don't you go for a small solar+battery solution.

Obviously, the person using fridge is consuming a lot energy and since it's bandA the fridge burning up the units.

Alternatively, you guys can create a sharing formula based on appliances in each room. But be aware that your neighbours can purchase an electric cooker closely.

Exactly. There is no way it won't bring trouble
Humans can be very complex
Best is to use direct connection, but making neighbors to share one prepaid must end in trouble.

If the sub meter only reads & u can't recharge through it individually, it won't solve the problem. Arguments will still arise.

How can 3 people use one prepaid meter..You shouldn’t have accepted such thing cause,it will look like a face me and face you problem..
I've seen an apartment complex of about 8 self contains, 2 shops sharing one prepaid meter. To make matters worse, the present and previous tenants have accumulated bills of almost half a million naira. Tenants have started moving out and nobody wants to move there because they know they're going to offset debts accumulated by other people.

ok this seems good. like how much does this cost and what's the installation like?
It doesn't work that way. You cannot use what you pay for, you will only pay for what you used.

The sub meter will only tell you how many kW each person used in that month and you can now used that to divide the billl

Hello guys

Please I'm having electricity problem with our new neighbour and I'm confused with what to do right now.

Here's the issue:

So we live in a compound where 3 rooms are connected to one prepaid.

So 3 of us donate to fund our prepaid meter.

A few months ago we were paying 4k and this usually last us for 2+ months. The reason I believe is that all we had to power is ceiling fans and charging of our devices (phones and laptops)

But ever since we got our new neighbor, the light bill has suddenly increased.

This month alone, we've recharged 8k+ individually and by my calculations, it'll cost each of us 12k+ for light to reach us for one month.

This is a significant jump from the 4k that will normally cover us for 2+ months.

I'm really not happy about this and don't know what to do right now.

I can't imagine paying 12k+ a month just to power my ceiling fans and laptop.

I have spoken with her and she told me she's using only fridge with the light, which I don't quite understand, how much our bill has jumped so significantly.

Please any suggestions on what to do will be welcome.

Few things I will like to ask you?

What area do you reside?

4k for 2months for 3 Tenants in this present day Nigeria? Electricity isn't that cheap na?

Maybe each person should get their individual meter or install a card reader for the prepaid meter.

Yes, you shouldn't get a house with shared meter. But doesn't mean other people won't do that especially if they see a house that satisfy every other criteria they're looking for.

After the terrible experience I had sharing prepaid meter with people, I made vow never to experience it again.
I have four numbers of one bedroom apartment, I make sure each of the apartment had pre paid meter, before I rented it out, because having a single meter for 4 apartment is a very serious situation.

Infact all them of haven't recharge the meter since they came in because the meter came with 100 units and it almost a year now.

Buy smart meters. They are sub-meters to track everyone's usage.

It is not possible for you guys to be on Band A and 3 rooms recharge 4k each in a month and used it for 2 months. So nobody uses iron for their clothes or what. You guys were on band B ,hence the cheap unit token that last for that period of months

I’ll advise you get solar or get your own meter. It’s better…when all of you are connected to one meter and some have more appliances than others you can’t really monitor how everyone is using it. And it’s tiring.

.Card readers cost 11k each and find electrician that will help you install it.Here, the card reader will show the amount of units consume per each room

How could this be true? Pre paid meter don't allow you to run on credit. Your debt must reduce after installation. It can never increase.

correct. they must however put it in a place where no one can by pass, where it is visible, and agree on a day to take the reading
Of course yes, the 3 sub-meters must be placed together at a place accessible and visible to them all.
Just that I'm busy now, I can design a template for him that they can use to record readings and payments.
