The Nigeria Police over the week, discovered an illegal mortuary at Akamkpa Local Government Area of Cross-Rivers State. Dead and embalmed bodies were seen resting on the walls of the mortuary. It was a gory sight to behold. Why would people establish mortuaries without the consent of the authorities? There are many more scattered all over the 36 states of Nigeria that have not been discovered. This pose a health hazards for citizens, as the state governments, local authorities, and health agencies are not aware of the existence of such places.

The operator of the mortuary has been arrested. During interrogation, he admitted that even the owner of the land where the mortuary has been established was not aware of such.

One question that comes to my mind is why the bodies have not been buried. What do these people do with embalmed bodies?

It might even be that those dead people were kidnapped and tortured to death. Otherwise, let the mortuary owner explain the identities of the corpses, how they got to the mortuary and why they were not claimed by relatives.

Same thing on my mind. Why have the relatives not come to claim the bodies if they were not murdered?

Sure, it's a health hazard...

It shouldn't be happening at this age but also don't forget that some families are poor and can't afford the normal or modern ways of preserving corpse until burial and you know how African traditions are for certain things to be in place before one is buried.


I'm not making excuses for the health implications but sometimes we need to think both ways to balance things up.

Islamic way of burial remains the best. With a white Cashmere of 8 yards, They wrap up the corpse, placed it inside their transparent coffin and off they go to d burial ground.

But my people will want to keep theirs for 3 years to make room for burial arrangement and unnecessary interment and wake keep.

The problem is lack of information or will I say ignorance of people’s way of life. The traditional way to preserve corpses in Calabar has always been by embalmed methods. Not cold room mortuaries.
Back in the days, the people of calabar would leave their death at home and invite a local practitioner to come to the house for the embalmment. That one room in the house is reserved for the body until burial. This was possible because people mostly own their houses.

Now,
Fast forward today, due to housing shortage and for the fact that most people are tenants, they no longer have the privilege of leaving the body in a rented apartment. But the people still prefer the traditional method of preserving the body. Just like the Egyptians still prefer Mormon tradition.

So, the business model of a collective space for the practice became an option. However, these should be done in an environment that is decent, while providing dignity of the bodies. At the same time, they most ensure that the activities do not constitute health hazard to the adjourning residents.

I don't want to believe police had no idea about the existence of such mortuaries, unless the mortuaries were not doing business with the public.

There is a funny new culture in parts of 9ja, especially SS, where people leave their dead in the morgue for months. Under the guise of preparing to give the dead a "befitting burial."

In reality, they want to gather enough money to show off to the society, friends, associates, etc.

Others want their Progressive Unions to be present at the burial, and fix a date they can be able to attend.

Others abroad want to attend, so their dead must be kept in the morgues, even if they start decaying.
It's no more about the dignity of the dead, but the ego of their living relatives.
