Beijing’s scrapping of tariffs for all but one African country will start May 1, Chinese President Xi Jinping said Saturday, according to state media.

China already has a zero-tariff policy for imports from 33 African countries, but Beijing said last year it would extend the policy to all 53 of its diplomatic partners on the continent.

China is Africa’s largest trading partner and a key backer of major infrastructure projects in the region through its vast “Belt and Road” initiative.

From May 1, zero levies will apply to all African countries except Eswatini, which maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

China claims the democratic island as its own and does not rule out using force to take it.

Many African countries are increasingly looking to China and other trading partners since US President Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs worldwide last year.

Xi said the zero-tariff deal “will undoubtedly provide new opportunities for African development”, announcing the date as leaders across the continent gathered in Ethiopia for the annual African Union summit.

Still won't stop those greedy people from increasing their prices. Govt have granted waivers on certain import commodities yet it doesn't reflect in consumer price until Govt had to directly intervene in importing certain food items that crashed food prices.

Export is different from import. Goods coming into China from Africa won't be taxed by Chinese government.

China is not having any major natural resources but they are rich in abundance in almost all with their operation in Africa

Bro, blame African leadership for the mismanagement. China is a top trading partner in Africa, aside trading, they invest big in Africa. They also provide cheaper loans to Africa countries than the west. There's also China-Africa funds that is directed into building Africa industrial capacity, infant, African leaders go to China to attend the summit.

The opposition on this forum should stop this annoying behavior. You have been engaging with me for years, you should understand our opinions about issues are words and opposite, why not respect it.

I stopped engaging with the regular opposition supporters on this forum because;

Let me explore with new set of people with potential and learn more not the defeated obsolete people. Any old opposition supporters monikers that attack my opinion in any form from henceforth would be blocked without any warning. You don't need to be seeing the comments that you will eventually attack.

China hasnt requested reciprocal measures. It a big plus for African countries.

It would be a bad idea if Nigeria joins the China Belt and Road initiative.

The tariff lord should keep on increasing tariffs. He would just be creating more opportunities for China to break through into new markets.
