The story is disjointed much detail is needed.
you are saying this under this assumption that we have a normal police force, unfortunately, we don't. They see everything as an opportunity to make money. They will forget to apply critical reasoning to such issues that the accuser can't keep money where people charge phones.

Good morning everyone

I don't know if this is the right section to post this thread.

An incident happened to me two weeks ago, on my way heading to church, I saw an infinix hot 8 phone, I took the phone to see if there is a way to locate the owner but the phone was off, that day happens to be on Wednesday, at last I was able to locate the owner on Friday, on the screen saver of the phone I saw the picture of the owner, the owner happens to be a welder, I had to locate him and give the phone back to him, he was very excited and he thanked me for returning the phone.

I was on my way coming from church on Sunday when the guy came with two policemen to arrest me that I stole the phone where he was charging it with 500,000 and power bank, and also borrowed 3k recharge card on the sim card, he was screaming very hard at the police station.

Instead of the police to investigate the matter, they said I was at fault that the phone has spent more than 24hours in my hand.

To cut the long story short,it was people In that area that came to my rescue that that was was always high on substance like weed and Colorado that the police should not mind him, after I was detained for over 24hours, i I was told to pay for the power bank, pay the 3k and bail fee....

Life is a lesson

I have learnt a very big lesson.
Report the matter at a higher police Station

Should you return a lost phone again? YES

How should you do it? Get 3 witnesses and draft a simple lost but found agreement, stating exactly what you found. Let the owner of the lost item sign that he accepts that you are not to be held liable for anything after returning the phone which you saw.

Ideally, this should be done in a police station but only very few of those criminals in uniform can be trusted.

Document the events (most likely with video recordings) from when you found out, how you were able to reach out to the owner, etc.

Include in the agreement that if the owner of the lost item ever turns out around to falsely accuse you, you are at liberty to sue him/her to court.

Corollary:
I just saw a post where someone said something about picking up the phone of someone who was murdered.

That's a tricky one. And that is where proper documentation is important. Do not pick up a phone with your bare hands. It's not like we have proper criminal forensic capacity in Nigeria, but better be safe than sorry.
While making a video, draw the attention of 3-4 passers-by. Let them know you saw the phone and you are not willing to carry it. One idiot might claim it's his/hers, the wayray don claim problem be that.
However, if nobody claims it, then the police can be notified via call (no waka enter police station o....hmm) to come and pick it up. As soon as police appear, and you don video their face, moveeeeeee!

Make sure your video recording is a live stream. E get why too..... God go help us
Ogbeni, why go through all this wahala when you can simply face front and ignore the phone. Which kind thing be this? angry

I always say it,a Nigerian police that still doesn't use forensics, even basic fingerprint to solve crimes, something the West started using around 1880,is not just unacceptable but an embarrassment to any black Nation.
Somebody said 500k was withdrawn from an account. It wouldn't take 2minutes to go through his bank history to authenticate the story, then confirm the account the alleged money was transferred to.
But no,the police sees every case as an avenue to make money and always abandon their commonsense.
They only take murder cases serious using torture and confession

Police too is one of the major problem of this country!
Police is not one major, saying one is like not saying the truth about it.
They are the 70% major problem of all sections in Nigeria. On the road, in the station, arresting innocent people, bride and corruption, exchanging criminals with a innocent people, releasing real criminals back into the society, escorting public office holder very corrupt, doing most of their dirty jobs etc.

Who trained the first to the 10th Nigeria police self?

I'm asking this questions all the time.
If the foundation be faulty, what can the righteous do?

Honestly, they're enablers in a way cos they know when a story is a lie. Either ways, I partially blame the guy for holding on to the phone, cos being a good samaritan requires wisdom in today's world. You see something, raise an alarm immediately so you have witnesses.

May our good not turn to evil.

Does that matter?

What matters is that he choose to do the responsible thing and return the phone to the owner.

The truth is that the vast majority of phone owners are happy when tbey retrieve their phones. Its the wicked and ungrateful ones that usually cause a storm, and one reason is because most of them would probably never return anyones phone.

Doing good can put someone in trouble
A lot of innocent citizens are in trouble because of the crime they haven't committed.
If such happens next time I know the next thing to do.
It's either I break it or throw it into the river.
I can't even go to the station to report to the police.
They just said you borrowed 3k on the Sim and you paid? Did you insist on confirming when the 3k was borrowed? Was it the period the phone was with you? Who's number was the 3k borrowed to? Did they even confirm from service provider if any 3k was borrowed? How did you unlock the phone? More details abeg!!
