Question: An imam leads people in tarawih prayer and recites one page each raka’ah, which may equal 15 verses. Some people say he prolongs reciting, and some say the opposite. What is known from the Sunnah regarding tarawih prayer? Is there a way to know if it is long or not according to the Sunnah? Summary of answer 1- If the recitation in tarawih prayer is kept short, then the number of rak`ahs is increased to 41 rak`ahs, as some of the imams said. 2- If a person wants to limit himself to eleven rak`ahs or thirteen rak`ahs in tarawih prayer, then he should lengthen the recitation and other essential parts of the prayer. Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah: Answer: Shaykh Ibn Jibrin (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “It is proven in al-Sahih that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to pray eleven rak`ahs at night in Ramadan and at other times, but he would make the recitation and other essential parts of the prayer so long that on one occasion he recited more than five juz in a single rak`ah, reciting slowly and carefully. And it is proven that he would get up halfway through the night , or shortly before or after that, and he would carry on praying until it was close to dawn, so he would pray thirteen rak`ahs in approximately five hours. This requires making the recitation and other essential parts of the prayer lengthy. And it is proven that when `Umar united the Companions in praying Tarawih, they would pray twenty rak`ahs, reciting approximately thirty verses of al-Baqarah in each rak`ah, i.e., roughly four or five pages, so they would recite Surah al-Baqarah in eight rak`ahs, and if they recited it in twelve rak`ahs they would think that it was short. This is the Sunnah in Tarawih prayer : if the recitation is kept short then the number of rak`ahs is increased to forty-one rak`ahs, as some of the imams said. If a person wants to limit himself to eleven rak`ahs or thirteen rak`ahs, then he should lengthen the recitation and other essential parts of the prayer. There is no set number for Tarawih prayer , rather what is required is to pray in the time that will enable you to attain tranquillity and not rush, no less than an hour or so. Whoever thinks that this is too long is going against what has been narrated and no attention should be paid to him.” (Fatawa Islamiyyah, 2:157-157) And Allah knows best. Or recite "Taa Haa" or just "Kuli huwa-Allahu ahad". Whereas we spend hours watching football matches and other non-rewarding deeds! Let's compare ourselves with the best generations of Muslims as we aspire to be in the same Jannah as them! May Allah make it easy for us all. |

Some Muslims are even looking for where to pray Ishaa quickly and Taraawih rush rush.... May end up praying Ishaa before its time and having no reward for Taraawih! We just dey rush rush till death comes! Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Verily, whoever stands for prayer in Ramadan with the Imam until he is finished, it will be recorded as if he prayed the entire night.” Grade: Authentic (Sahih), recorded by At-Tirmidhi (806), Abu Dawud (1375), An-Nasa'i (1605), and Ibn Majah (1327). You want big reward but you can't work for it! You have eaten and is energized! Why not burn some calories and thank Allah? IAM4BAT4plus4: |

motayoayinde:Yes, and his recitation was very much sometimes like 5 Juz in a single rakah! A Juz is like 20 pages in a 604 pages Qur'an! So he read like 100pages in one rakah! Salallahu alayhi waslam! We are lazy oooooooooooooo! To even pray 11 rakah for 30mins na so so complaints! |

Does that mean those who use the last ten chapters of holy Qur'an to pray taraweeh are not acceptable? |

tolufase:It is acceptable but you might be losing some important rewards for praying too short except if that's all you know. Allah will not place burden on you bigger than what you can bear. That's the promise. |

What’s the ruling for those that can’t recite long surahs? Or only know a few surahs? |

AntiChristian:AlhamduliLah for the fact that the Tarawih prayer is not compulsory 😉 Imagine standing up for that long as you claim after all the hardships one went through during the day? Leave all this type of sunah to the Arab nations where provisions are made for Ramadan |

AntiChristian:wow so beautiful! Yesterday I was heading back home from work, and there is this hausa quarter in my neighbourhood, and I saw about 50 of them just staring up to the sky, and I was just wondering what was going on! Now I knew they were searching for the moon because their ramadan fast fasting has started. Am a christian but I swear to God these muslims are more dedicated to their religion than we christians |
