Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, one of the most powerful Republican figures in the Midwest, has announced he will not return to his post after the 2026 legislative session concludes, ending a record-setting 14-year run as Speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly. The departure marks yet another high-profile Republican exit during Trump's second term.

Vos, 57, has long been a dominant force in Wisconsin politics, so influential that insiders dubbed him the state's "shadow governor." But his relationship with Donald Trump turned toxic after he initially declined to investigate Trump's baseless claims of voter fraud following the 2020 election. Trump responded by calling Vos a "RINO" at a 2022 Wisconsin rally, telling the crowd "a lot of people think he's a Democrat," and later endorsed a primary challenger against him. A recall effort backed by Trump loyalists ultimately failed.

Vos did eventually cave to pressure and commissioned a probe led by former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Michael Gableman, but that investigation produced no evidence of fraud and descended into conspiracy and disorder. Vos fired Gableman and has since called the decision to launch the probe the single biggest mistake of his political career. He is now spending his final months in office pushing to have Gableman's law license revoked.

The Speaker disclosed that he suffered a mild heart attack in November, describing it as "the tap on the shoulder" he needed to confirm his decision to step away, though he insisted his health was not the only factor. He acknowledged it is "unlikely" he would seek office again without completely ruling it out.

Despite his clashes with Trump, Vos spent years as a fierce obstacle to Democratic Governor Tony Evers, blocking the majority of Evers' legislative agenda, stripping gubernatorial powers during a lame-duck session before Evers even took office in 2018, and successfully suing to overturn Evers' COVID-19 stay-at-home order. Evers offered a measured goodbye, acknowledging their deep disagreements while crediting Vos for his passion and political skill.
