Popular Islamic cleric, Ahmad Gumi, has defended the application of Shariah law in Nigeria, saying it remains the prerogative of Muslims, just as the United States protects Christian interests.

Gumi was reacting to reports that some United States Congressmen submitted to President Donald Trump in which they demanded the abolition of Shariah and blasphemy laws in Nigeria.

In a post shared on his verified social media page, the cleric argued that Muslims have the right to be governed by their religious injunctions.

“Shariah Law is the Muslims’ prerogative just as the US found it only necessary to protect the Christians,” he said.

He further alleged that Muslims were victims of what he described as “occult terror” imported into the country by hidden forces.

“At the same time, Muslims are more victims of this occult terror imported into the country by hidden forces they very well know,” Gumi stated.

In another post, the cleric questioned what he termed a double standard in the global discourse on religion and governance.

“It’s ok for US evangelical Christians administration for Israel to live by biblical stories yet Haram for Muslims to live by the Quranic injunctions,” he wrote.

Shariah law operates alongside conventional legal systems in several northern states, mainly in matters concerning personal and family law for Muslims.

Shariah under fair circumstances has no reason to go through the law talkless of being used as a state-wide institution. It is a form of mutual submission to a religious justice system. It needs both parties to willingly come under the shariah court and not the parallel forceful type we see weekly in northern Nigeria.
In the bible it is there also. Justice for isrealits and by isrealites. The issue of contention here should be "who is a muslim?" One who says he is or one who the society/his own community says is one?

Also should shariah supercede secular justice system?

Una dey always like to make this man trend. He is mentally unstable for crying out loud and doesn't speak for the North in any capacity.

But this time around he is right. If states with 98% Muslim population decide to adopt Shari'a for rulings on social issues such as divorce, marriages, inheritance etc. I don't see how that is a problem.

Mind you, the Shari'a law provision is subordinate to the constitution of Nigeria. Even the highest Shari'a court ranks lower than state high courts. Moreover, A non-Muslim cannot be compelled to submit to a Shari’a court.

So I honestly don't see what all the fuss on Shari'a law is about. According to the Constitution, Nigeria is a secular state (Section 10 prohibits adoption of a state religion).

Peter Obi is not and will never be your problem. Gumi is the one who has been making inciteful statements on a daily basis and supports terrorists and terrorism but still roams free. Oh! Can you explain why people businesses are being destroyed in the name of sharia law, Christians living in sharia states can not take alcohol in the name of what please? Many people that were arrested in hotel by the hisbal were for what reason. Mr man stop defending nonsense.

Not a big fan of Gumi for his controversial clerical and tribal excesses and links to compromised people in security matters but he is absolutely spot on on this one. The report went too far. The shariah law does not persecute christians or support their persecution. So why call for it's abolition? It has existed peacefully for a thousand years in Nigeria before incidents of terrorism which are extremes to the shariah laws, one of the reasons for their being called terrorists anyway. So that line in the report is showing favoritism for christians over Muslims, the same problems that you claim you want to solve. The U.S. had better not create a bigger problem for Nigeria than we already have. Since they predicted Nigeria's disintegration during Obj's tenure and it didn't happen, we stood united and we are rebounding today economically even against the USD, now makes you wonder if they practically want to use their own hands to disintegrate it since their prediction failed?

I trust my president, PBAT. He is already taking the right steps to winning the battle against insecurity where everyone shall feel safe where they are domiciled. We shall overcome before the very eyes of the U.S. but not through this their divisive rhetorics. We shall work with their good advice and discard their ulterior motives. We are a smart people.

No Shari'a court in Nigeria has ever beheaded or stoned anyone to death. Moreover, criminal cases like rape and murder are not tried in Shari'a courts, they go straight to a state or federal high court.

Which law politicians and judges uses to manipulate electorates votes against their wish? Was it Sharia law late buhari applied to set free convinted criminals (Dariye and Co.) in the name of presidential pardon? Sharia law is practiced in Moosleeems dominated State, hope that's convenient for Moosleems, rather we should find ways to improve its application, to also protect non moosleeems from abuse.
