sirpharrell: Mirasteel:Smh. Many of you argue blindly out of ignorance. This is a public spectacle you are making. Do you know her more than herself. She is Yoruba with paternal ancestry and Itsekiri from maternal link. It is obvious thaf you don't understand Yoruba. She said it there that her Mother is Itsekiri and she's still alive hale and hearty at 93 years. She's literally speaking Yoruba. Many non-Yoruba who were born and raised in Yorubaland and fluent in Yoruba can understand what she is saying in Itsekiri. I understood about 95% of what she said. Reminds me of the Igala language too |

Omo....Itshekiri na pure Yoruba — no story! This is actually very cool. I understood very well most of what madam Tinubu said in her speech even though I'm not Itshekiri. |

ariesbull:Until you understand that there is a clear, ocean-wide difference between the Benin royal stool and the Binis themselves, you will keep missing the point. Take it or leave it, the Benin royal stool is of Yoruba ancestry. This is not debatable — I will not argue about it with you or with anyone else. If Ginuwa was ancestrally a Bini man, why is it that today his descendants — the Itsekiri — speak Yoruba and not the Bini language? As a Yoruba man from Lagos State, I clearly understood much of what Madam Tinubu said in her speech. As a Bini man, do you understand even a little of what she was saying? You need to reflect deeply on that. It is on record that the Yoruba language was the official language spoken at the palace of the Oba of Benin at the time of the arrival of the Portuguese. Why would the Bini people be speaking Yoruba at the palace of their own king, don't you wonder? This may sound painful to you as a Bini man, but the truth remains that Benin royalty is of Yoruba descent. Ìrẹ o! |

On which record ?. The history of the Itshekiri people is closely connected to the ancient Benin Kingdom in present-day Edo State, Nigeria. According to Itshekiri oral tradition, their royal lineage began with Ginuwa, a prince from the Benin royal family. Ginuwa is said to have been the son of Oba Olua, although some historical accounts link him to Oba Ewuare or his descendants. Due to political disagreements or succession disputes in Benin around the 15th century, Ginuwa left the kingdom and migrated southward toward the Niger Delta region. After his migration, Ginuwa settled in the coastal area that later became the center of the Warri Kingdom. This marked the foundation of the Itshekiri monarchy. The traditional ruler of the kingdom came to be known as the Olu of Warri, and the kingdom itself developed around what is now Warri in Delta State. Although the Itshekiri trace their royal ancestry to Benin, they gradually formed a distinct ethnic and cultural identity in their new environment. The influence of Benin can still be seen in the Itshekiri system of kingship, coronation ceremonies, and certain cultural practices. However, over time, the Itshekiri people blended with neighboring groups such as the Ijaw and Urhobo, shaping a unique identity of their own. Their language, though influenced by Edo and later by Portuguese due to early European contact, is more closely related to Yoruba. By the 15th and 16th centuries, the Itshekiri had become important intermediaries in trade between inland communities and European merchants, especially the Portuguese. This early contact with Europeans led to the adoption of Christianity by some rulers and further strengthened the political and economic position of the Warri Kingdom in the Niger Delta. In summary, the Itshekiri people trace their royal origins to a Benin prince who migrated from the Benin Kingdom and established the Warri Kingdom in the Niger Delta. While they maintain strong historical ties to Benin, centuries of interaction with neighboring groups and foreign traders helped shape the distinct Itshekiri identity known today. Christlike01: |

LegendHero:Oluremi “Remi” Tinubu, who is the current First Lady of Nigeria and the wife of President Bola Tinubu, comes from a mixed ethnic background. She was born in Ogun State to a Yoruba father and an Itsekiri mother. Because of this, she is often described as Yoruba-Itsekiri in terms of tribe and heritage, reflecting both sides of her family background. |

AnonPoet:Sen. Oluremi Tinubu connects with her roots as she gives her speech in her native Itsekiri dialect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xCe-SXBWpao?si=BdmXwlaoJPoC2Vze Warri Sentinel • Feb 27 2026 Indeed, Senator Oluremi Tinubu's biological father is Ijebu from Ogun State and her biological mother is Itsekiri from Delta State. Her spoken Itsekiri shows the importance of connecting with both sides of your roots (paternal and maternal). Oluremi Tinubu ancestrally belongs to both great lineages as Ijebus ancestry created part of Itsekiri people. Ilajes and Ife descendants also make up the PARENT ethnic group of the larger Itsekiris people. Itsekiri communities founded by Ijebus before the 1480 arrival of exiled Prince Ginuwa from Benin are Ode Itsekiri, Omadino, Ogidigben, etc, one of the Itsekiri communities founded by Ilajes from Ugboland in Ondo State is Ugborodo, etc, (the oil and gas-rich community formerly called Escravos). Ureju was founded by Ife migrants centuries back. The LARGEST percentage of the oil and gas in Southern Delta State comes from Itsekiriland and the natural gas that feeds the industrial hubs of Lagos, Ogun, right up to Ghana via the "West African Gas pipeline" comes directly from majorly Ugborodo and other parts of Itsekiriland. |
