Originalsly:
Buhari I had to be right approach ... ban unnecessary imports which increased local production. Tinubu iis using scarce foreign reserves to import food. Whose farmers will benefit from this?...our farmers or foreign farmers? ...whose economy will gain form this? ...ours or the exporting country's? ... and what do they say about a country that cannot feed itself? Obi ...is off with his logic ...wayyyyy off. What does he expect will happen in a poverty stricken country if food prices are kept high ? The blind showing the blind the way forward.

Is our foreign reserve not risinghuh

What does these clueless politicians really want. If food prices are costly, they are the first to shout. If prices drop for the betterment of the masses, they still spew out foolish and pointless attacks.

So what's your solution?

Keep the high prices?

Then tomorrow you and Peter Obi will complain about "hunger in the land"?

Confused set of people.

Call instead for more incentives or subsidies for farmers, to lower their production costs, NOT return Nigerians to high food prices in the name of 'protecting farmers'. You can't sacrifice the interests of the majority for one group.
The win-win solution for Nigerians, is to not only bring down food prices, but also bring down the cost of production. This is not done by importation but by subsidizing the agric sector instead of giving the money to other countries, importing the farm produce subsidized by government of those countries. The government can bring down the cost of fertilizer, pesticides, incenticides and seed inputs, then the cost of food prices will come down naturally. But if we bring down the food prices by importation, we will only impoverish the local farmers and increase the suffering in the land, which ironically we are trying to solve.

That's the first thing you and Atiku are expected to do if you guys win in 2027. How can you look rich outward and poor inside?

JuanDeDios:
Everything you said is correct (apart from the bolded). These things go in circles - every farmer worth his salt knows it and those who are able prepare for it. I was just pointing out that when the high-price years come around, people will not remember and will make it look as if farmers deliberately create high prices.

Mr Obi is right to point it out too - that high prices, even though they're good, also have a downside on the national economy. Nothing charlatanish about that.
JuanDeDios

See how you articulated your thoughts and marshalled your points without bias.

Your knowledge base makes you know, "Rain and Sunshine, Heat and Cold, Night and Day" will come around again and again, but it is the way farmers manage those seasons that eventually leads to success.

If Peter Obi had simply said what you said, I would be clapping for him for understanding the farming cycles.

Lol.i am.just laughing.

Our messiah said low cost of food has put our farmer into poverty!

So we should increase the cost of food.

It's behind your level of comprehension.

You allowed farmers to use costly tools and materials to farm,at the time of harvest you import cheap fool stuffs from other countries.

What does that mean for the farmers?
I thought you were all crying "ebi npa yin" earlier. Now the problem is that foods are so cheap and the farmers are not making enough money?
Same guy who was trying to negotiate the price of groundnut.

If you understand what he meant you are smart. Many of us stored many bags of grains, hoping to sell and make our profits. But today, it has crashed putting many of us into debts. As I am typing this, my bro is in a debt of #54M. OBI is RIGHT, our business is being frustrated by the government, that made food stuffs gone so high, due to bad economy. And today, it has crashed, such that it has put many of us into debts.
I think you and your brother are the wicked ones. Why will you hoard food and wait for prices to soar? Isn't that wickedness?

European and other saner countries subsidise their local farmers in order to keep farmers ontop, as well as stabilise cost of food.
They don't go to import the same food produced by their local farmers.

Hahaha 🤣😂.... Obi's statement these days show that PBAT is performing. He tells us that the figures dished out by CBN and NBS are meaningless. That the common man is not feeling it. Now food prices are down and the common man is feeling it and he says that we are killing farmers. And you want me to take this one serious?
Re: Crashing Food Price Would Make Farmers Poor - Peter Obi by Bastiver(m): 4:10pm On Feb 28
So na Peter obi say all this thing.
Okayeed, I already know who I will vote for like this.
Your farmers should vote for you, then we will now check who owns Nigeria whether it is your Farmers or other citizens.
Goodluck.

Incentives on already produced goods?
Some of you just bland and always waiting to be a tool any for any stupid policy churned out by this incompetent administration.
What happens to policies that will stop importation of those same goods for a safe period?
If you chase away the farmers due to your inconsiderate policy and flood the market with only foreign goods what happened to gdp?
Re: Crashing Food Price Would Make Farmers Poor - Peter Obi by Guestmale: 4:17pm On Feb 28
Thank God Mr Obi acknowledge there is Fall in food prices but never to the point of making farmers fall into debt. The high prices of food in 2024 forced many people to farm last year and God was so merciful last year in giving us abundant rainfall leading to bumber harvest hence the fall in food prices.

Tinubu is truly a genius.
Let's pray that God grant will him good health in his second term.
See how your simple question will turn them to diseased Zombies. They are shouting Tinubu is using scarce foreign reserve to import foodstuffs yet the foreign reserve is heading to 15 years record high.
Wetin dem go talk again? If dem complain too much about reduction in food prices people can stone them. They don't even know what to say again.
Naira will gain much more value before the election and their coalition is still yet to attract a single Governor.
In Aregbe's state of Osun the Governor there was rejected by APC then decamped to Accord party vowing to work for Asiwaju. In Amaechi's River's State the Governor decamped to APC not ADC. In Atiku's Adamawa the Governor left PDP for APC yesterday ignoring ADC and in Peter Obi's Anambra the Governor is in APGA working tirelessly for the president's re-election.
What a way to mess up the careers of serial defectors.

If prices go lower than the cost of production then why wouldn’t you cut your losses and move your remaining money into another business line, thereby making food scarce and expensive in due course huh

How is that rocket science?

Do you know better than this former AfDB president, who won the World Food prize for his excellent work in PDP’s administration to boost food production?

Nigeria’s food importation policy could destroy country’s agriculture, warns Akinwumi Adesina

The President of the African Development Bank Group Dr. Akinwumi Adesina has said the decision by Nigeria’s government to allow massive food importation risks destroying the country’s agriculture.

This follows the announcement by Nigeria’s Minister for Agriculture Abubakar Kyari on July 10 that the Federal Government would suspend duties, tariffs, and taxes on the importation of maize, husked brown rice, wheat, and cowpeas through the country’s land and sea borders, for 150 days.

“Nigeria’s recently announced policy to open its borders for massive food imports, just to tackle short-term food price hikes, is depressing,” Adesina told African Primates of the Anglican Church at a Retreat in Abuja, Nigeria, on Friday.

He warned that the policy could undermine all the hard work and private investments that have gone into Nigeria’s agriculture sector.

“Nigeria cannot rely on the importation of food to stabilize prices. Nigeria should be producing more food to stabilize food prices, while creating jobs and reducing foreign exchange spending, that will further help stabilize the Naira,” said the African Development Bank president.

“Nigeria cannot import its way out of food insecurity,” he said, “Nigeria must not be turned into a food import-dependent nation.”

Tell us one thing you think Dey can do for this farmers wey Buhari no do , he closed the border because of them, give them loans and grants they turned around and become demigod , local rice become expensive more than foreign rice , they produced and hoard every staple food… to hell with the farmers , we can’t continue to suffer just to make the farmers happy
Re: Crashing Food Price Would Make Farmers Poor - Peter Obi by Reference(m):
You see this conundrum.
It will spark wild debate because it appears as a paradox. The paradox that has beleaguered this country for decades.

The forces of productivity versus the forces of liberal trade. Not only food is consumed by this quagmire. Fuel, healthcare, education, most industrial products....assembled automobiles.....

At what point do we accept the fact that we cannot compete with imported goods due to the poor state of the local economy and to solve the chicken and egg equation we need to kill inflation and invest in productivity.

Import more and local production will die, kill local production and you will be forced to borrow to hold the value of your currency down the line.

Okay, enough wailing. What is the solution.
Investment, investment, investment. Every naira we spend MUST BE TARGETTED to bring down the cost of production.

We must have a government that thinks day and night about how to make production cheaper, faster, better, easier.

For instance, our governors spend millions building airports and our Federal government is spending trillions building 'coastal road'. Is this the best way to expend transportation resources. No.

Government should be looking to invest in rail and marine transport which are renowned globally to be the cheapest way of moving goods from source to use. Lower cost of transport and you have struck the first wicket at making local production competitive and local producers prosperous sustainably.
