Lol.. my friend don’t be ridiculous and clever by half! You think you’re talking to kids here. What do you mean by ‘stored’ many bags. Oga you were HOARDING Foodstuffs meant to be sold at the right time to make good turnover for you.. Instead you lots were Greedy as many Nigerian farmers/business men have been. Greed “killed” most farmers/business men business.. they thought of themselves rather than the people. I’m not saying storage/hoarding is bad.. But when done so long at DETRIMENT OF people is Bad I don’t pity these hoarders sirchim: |

anonimi:I think your are not thinking this through —if prices fall as a results of cheaper alternatives and you decide to close your operations. There’s no way your absence can lead to scarcity since you didn’t cause the initial reduction in prices. You get? If imports are cheaper than local productions then we will simply imports because that increases disposable income of the people. |

[quote author=Slytiger post=138612657]"The drop of food prices in the market has killed our farmers" - Peter Obi watched the very short online video and the dude talking in that video was rambling on with his effeminate voice and disjointed speech. Effective communication is key and this dude who desperately wants to be a President did say CLEARLY that food prices are cheap from "imported foods" BUT that's NOT TRUE. I was surprised while watching a recent AIT video on farmers in Borno and Yobe States and food inflation has dropped significantly due to the Governments giving out free tractors and improved seedlings to the farmers who turned out bumper harvests. Food prices have indeed dropped in several Northern Nigeria States due to State and Federal Government interventions. The Southern Nigeria States are the ones I have doubts about due to the effect of multiple LEVIES demanded from commodities traders and food dealers while transporting foods from the North to the South. The greedy hoarders of food items too especially in the Southern Nigeria States have to be totally eliminated with the governments offering more modern silos, and post-harvest preservation techniques. Period. |

lionshare:Your absence will lead to reduced supply in the market, not so? How will perpetual imports affect your exchange rate and spiral into inflation? Have you seen someone eat his amala and he still has it in front of him on the table ![]() |

Obi farmers too buy food, and affordable food has positive effects on other sectors, if food is cheap, other things too will be affordable and Nigerians will have more funds to save, for investment and capital mobilisation. Every Nigerian benefits from low prices of food, everyone eats different varieties of foods. Obi the last time you were asking the government to allow import to reduce food prices. Wayo man |
| Re: Crashing Food Price Would Make Farmers Poor - Peter Obi by GerogeI(m): 7:24pm On Feb 28 |
I did not know a lot of Nigerians are this poorly educated. It's called food security. That's why some countries will even buy from farmers and destroy in other to assure of next years production. 1. There is nothing like food hoarding in a free market. The market is unregulated, so people who store food must lower prices if they donot see enough buyers otherwise they make losses from spoilt food. Those people who buy and store food are providing a service, that ensures the food is available in off harvest season. They have one year to sell off what they stored, so demand determines prices, not hoarding. 2. The current sustained harsh economy since the last 3 years of Tinubu, has forced a lot of people back to the farm as last resort. That's one half of the reason why you are having an increased harvest forcing down prices. People are currently harvesting cassava with no buyers in the villages, and its a big problem. 3. In a desperate move to try an cushion the ill thougth polices of subsidy removal, electric power cost hike, currency devaluation and now increasing tax burden, the fire brigade approach of encouraging food imports was adopted by this government. An indirect food subsidy. In the last two years, this has caused massive losses to those who normally store foods for off harvest season consumption. Most are not storing anything this time. Meaning that production that should go into storage, are currently on sale, hence prices are crashing! What does this mean? 1. Yes you are buying food cheap now, you will buy them way more costlier than usual later in the year, even with the Govt. Imports as the supply will be way less than last year's due to no storage. 2. You will buy food even costlier in next years harvest, as less people will bother farming with the losses and wastage they incured this year. 3. In the medium term, you will become dependent on imported food as most farmers will pull out of the farming sector. Your food will become more dollar dependent, and every little change of exchange rate will impact your feeding. Note; The increased food produce has nothing to do with any deliberate action of this government of posturing. Rather, it is a direct human response to hardship. So the government has no plans or infrastructure to absorb and preserve the excess production, now that they have killed off the middlemen who usually provide less than ideal, informal but highly essential storage. This is a classical case of dumping in Economics, except that its not being done by a foreign government, but by your own government for political expediency, but will kill off your farming sector in the medium term. |

GerogeI:GerogeI Nice write up. I truly commend your reasoning. Please let me also try to address the issues you put forth, with my small level. 1. Food security Nigeria has enough land to feed itself. Really. Whoever tells you otherwise is a liar. The challenge is the people to farm. 2. Hoarding There are hoarders and middle men. My own sister in law makes more profits on each bag of sold garri, from Ilorin to resell in Lagos, than the cassava farmers and all the women making the garri. Remove people like her and you get a stable system/process flow in place. 3. People going back to the farm and producing excess. This is what would solve the issue (1) you highlighted. 4. Food to be in storage currently being sold. This is how it used to be. It's the excess that should be in storage. It doesn't make sense to store what is not enough normally. 5. Fewer people will go into farming next year and thereafter. This would never happen in Nigeria. Farming is mad lucrative. The value chain is being disrupted by rent seekers in the mode of middle men and hoarders. 6. Farming sector will die. Now, I laugh. |

What government should crash even more than food is cement. Cement is now the new gold for Dangote, BUA, Lafarge and other idiots. They are exploiting and 'raping' us like mad. Government should act like YarAdua did in 2008 and crash the cement. Shelter like food is a basic necessity of life |

This is too costly error from obi. It's like he doesn't know where to belong, just opening his mouth at every issue without thinking. Before you say good is too high and blame the government, now the price is down you are still crying. |

[quote author=Slytiger post=138612657]"The drop of food prices in the market has killed our farmers" - Peter Obi farmers (many of whom are greedy) will inflate prices despite government subsidies, loans, ban on importation and other polices to make farming more viable to the detriment of the masses. The case of rice especially under Buhari is an easy example. |

Another is that can they feed the country capital No... If you think that the government should stop importing cheap food stuff into the country then ready for the real hunger...
