The Jews extensively interpreted the tanakh which is what we call the old testatment. To them the bible is a total way of life, its their own tradition and culture. To us, it's a book for spiritual guide.

The old testament defines the Jewish culture, that's why it's was crazy to the Jews when they heard Paul telling them the old testament is no longer binding on them- they were going to beat him to death. It's like someone telling u to abandon your Yoruba or Igbo culture for whatever reason.
James was wiser, he told the Jews it's ok to follow the old testament but they should understand the way to God is now the Messiah- Jesus Christ.

Truth is u cant fully understand the old testament without studying how its interpreted by the ancient jews- remember they were the ones that wrote and compiled it. It's their book.
exegesis of the old testament can be found in the mishnah, midrash, targum, Gemara and talmud. Though not all make sense and u need discernment to know what's divinely true.

For example genesis Rabbah midrash claimed Jephthah fulfilled his vow by sacrificing his daughter as a burnt offering to God though condemned for such. I've looked at the passage thoroughly in the book of judges and there's nothing to suggest that's what happened.
So one has to be careful what u take to be true from those books- they are not divinely inspired.
