Is it the responsibility of your parents to take care of you

It's not a responsibility. It's an expression of love and gratitude.

I'll always say this "I don't know the kain parents y'all had, that makes taking care of them look somehow".

I lost one parent while I was still in Primary school, the second parent literally raise me and my siblings to where we are today, never sent us off to stay with relatives cos no one can take care of a child like a parent.

This parent that sacrificed so much just to see us turn out responsible in life - not just academically, but also with good morals and unbending self-respect and esteem to me DESERVES everything I can give.

Why am I writing that epistle above? If you had (a) good parent(s), you'll see it as an honour to actually take care of them now thay they're not as strong as they used to be.

Yes, I intentionally used a gender neutral pronoun.

Was it your parents responsibility to take care of you from the very first day you were born? If YES, why?

Now you are grown but wisdom did not grow with you to let you know that one day you will be more fragile like a child again.

If you are fortunate to reach 70years old, kindly remember to ask this question again.
Well, I know the kind of parents you have, but don't assume that everyone's parents are like yours.

It actually depends on the context, but here is the bitter truth: You cannot take care of family and forget yourself.

A man in a pit cannot pull another person out of that same pit. You have to be on solid ground yourself before you can offer a hand to others. If you are a youth still struggling to find your footing, you must prioritize your future. Don't spend your meager "peanuts" trying to sponsor all your siblings' education while your own life is stagnant. Education is good, but gratitude is never a guarantee. In many cases, they might finish school and still despise you for not doing "more."

On the flip side, if you are truly capable and you choose to ignore those in need, then that is also wrong. It is a delicate balance of your actual capacity versus their level of entitlement.

Be warned: Entitlement is deadly. Once you start that "I want to help" journey, know that there is often no going back. The moment you set a boundary or hit a rough patch, the same people you helped will be the first to label you "wicked." This cycle rarely stops with siblings; it almost always extends to other relatives

Help with wisdom, not out of guilt. Build yourself first so you can be a pillar later.

No, it's not... They're the ones who brought me into this world without my consent... The only thing I can do is appreciate them, but they're not my responsibility.

So why did you bring this question here when you already know the answer?

Filial care (the act of taking care of your ascendants) is a moral act, not a legal one. You don't have to do it.

But asking such questions or even seeing filial care as burdening exposes a deep, dysfunctional upbringing issues.

People from healthy homes with responsible parents do not contemplate being responsible for their aged parents. It is something you just do because it is right.

To abandon your aged parents to the brutality of this world is just sick. You should also ask yourself if you want your child to abandon you when you're old.

Well, I advise everyone to be sensible enough to plan for their retirement...and be responsible enough to care for their folks in old age.
