Common Mistakes Candidates Make When Answering Motivational Alignment Profile (MAP)

Unlike aptitude tests (which evaluate ability), MAP assesses:

1. What motivates you at work
2. Your preferred work environment
3. The type of tasks you enjoy
4. What drives your performance
5. Cultural fit with an organization
MAP helps employers understand whether your personal motivations align with the job role and company culture.

How It Works
1. Usually 100 to 150 short statements
2. You rate how much each statement describes you
3. Format: “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”
4. Takes about 20 to 30 minutes
5. No right or wrong answers
Examples:
“I enjoy working in competitive environments.”
“I prefer structured tasks with clear procedures.”
“Recognition motivates me more than financial reward.”

Common Mistakes Candidates Make When Answering MAP (Motivational Alignment Profile)

A. Trying to “Game” the Test
Some people think:
“Let me choose what I think the company wants.”
Problem: MAP detects contradictory patterns.
Example:
Strongly Agree: “I love taking risks.”
Strongly Agree: “I avoid uncertainty.”
Strongly Agree: “I prefer stable routine.”
That combination looks confused.
B. Choosing All Leadership Answers
Not every position requires high dominance.
High leadership with low teamwork can look:
1. Overbearing
2. Hard to manage
3. Not collaborative
4. Companies want balanced professionals, not superheroes.
C. Ignoring Cultural Fit
NLNG values:

1. Accountability
2. Performance ownership
3. Results orientation
If your answers show:
1. Low drive
2. Low responsibility
3. Low initiative
You may not progress to the NLNG Assessment Center.
D. Being Too Neutral
Too many neutral answers can suggest:
1. Low self-awareness
2. Low engagement
3. Unclear motivation
4. Use neutral only when genuinely accurate.
E. Overthinking Every Question
Motivational Alignment Profile (MAP) is not an IQ test.
Your first instinct is usually the most accurate.
Overthinking leads to inconsistency.

Exactly!! A huge chunk of what I'm focused on is work for now. I'm at least gaining some form of experience while preparing for whatever comes as a result of this assessment.

If you've noticed, I haven't been all that active. I occasionally view once and get going. It's early and it's the weekend, so I decided to "put pen to paper".

airsaylongcome made mention of the SHL MAP and it just felt like it went under the radar. That material is 💯 % useful.

Nimora, I know you do come here almost every night like a peeping Tom to see what you could come pick up (something of importance).

NLNGOFFERLETTER, please and please, be with us every step of the way. You and @Airsay are doing a whole lot on this thread - the equivalent of changing lives.

Re: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Higherupgrade: 4:36pm On Mar 02
it actually does

The first two options you pick usually reflect your strongest behavioural preferences (like safety, teamwork, leadership, continuous improvement), while the one you leave out is your least preferred in that scenario.

As an engineering candidate, I leaned more towards safety, teamwork, leadership, and upskilling because they align with my strengths. But I don’t think it’s strictly graded by course it’s more about consistency and how well your choices align with the company’s values overall.

And the ones one didn't choose( least preferred), does it they take it as though it doesn't apply to one at all?

If the options are safety, teamwork, and customer focus and you pick customer focus as least preferred, it doesn’t mean you don’t care about customers. It just means that in that specific scenario, the other two felt more critical.

All in all we pray and hope for positive feedback ending of this month/ early april

Re: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Bobokan: 4:43pm On Mar 04
I did see it once too, but they did say it's okay if that's my pace though. I then tried to go faster.

Vickqwerty:
Exactly! That’s just my kind of person…I’m thorough. I was being so careful during the job-focused assessment that the system actually sent me a pop-up notification. That “We noticed that you are slow, if you can’t see the question clearly contact your recruiter.” Did anyone here got that notification as well?
Re: NLNG Recruitment 2025/2026 by Bobokan: 5:09pm On Mar 04
I think it's due to the volume of applicants and it would help them ensure all the applicants they pick are likely a good fit (culturally).

Think about this scenario: The company needs 100 staff. They can only manage the interviewing of about 1000 people. 100,000 people took the test, 5000 - 7000 people scored satisfactory grades (A and B). 1050 people had As in both tests.

Say they call only the 1050 (which isn't really a good idea as the aptitude tests do not evaluate people and communication skills) for the interview stage, and 200 people passed the interview tasks, but only 63 of them are a good culture fit, what do they do? (After they've wasted time and resources interviewing about a thousand people and there could have been people with B(s) that could have filled the void)

Artsynatty:
But, why though? Why can't they just wait till the interview stage to know if the person is indeed a fit?

Wemimo5:

What Does Receiving a Badge Really Mean?

If you received a badge on the SHL platform, that’s generally a good sign. It usually means you performed strongly in that particular assessment.

Badges are awarded when you:

Score above a set benchmark

Show strong ability in a specific skill area

Perform better than many other candidates (high percentile ranking)

In simple terms, it suggests you demonstrated:

Solid analytical and monitoring skills

Good decision-making in process-based situations

A competitive performance compared to others who took the test

That said, it’s important to keep expectations balanced.

A badge does not automatically mean you’ve been selected for the job. It simply means you did well in that specific part of the assessment.

Does Everyone Get a Badge?

No, not everyone receives one.

Badges are usually given only to candidates who meet or exceed a certain performance threshold. So if you got one, it means you stood out in that area.

What Happens After That?

Once the SHL assessment is completed, the employer looks at the full picture, not just one badge.

They may consider:

Your overall test performance

Other assessment results

Your CV and qualifications

Behavioral or personality evaluations

Interview performance

So while a badge is definitely a positive sign and something to feel good about, moving to the next stage depends on the employer’s entire evaluation process.

In short: it’s encouraging, but it’s not the final decision.
