FEC Okays 100% Salaries Increase As Gratuity For Retiring Fed Workers by saintopus(op): 4:25pm On Mar 05
The Federal Executive Council has approved the implementation of a transformative Exit Benefit Scheme that grants retiring Federal Civil Servants a gratuity equal to 100 per cent of their total annual emolument.

Effective from 1 January 2026, the scheme marks a major milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the welfare architecture of the Civil Service and ensuring that officers who have devoted a minimum of 10 years of service to the nation retire with dignity and financial security.

This was contained in a statement signed on Thursday by the Director of Public Relations in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Eno Olotu.

The approval followed extensive deliberations and technical input from an Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee constituted by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

The committee worked closely with the National Pension Commission, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to design a sustainable and impactful implementation framework.

The Exit Benefit Scheme is a strategic enhancement of the existing Contributory Pension Scheme framework. It is specifically designed to provide a substantial financial safety net at retirement, thereby strengthening long-term income security for Federal Civil Servants in treasury-funded ministries, extra-ministerial departments, and agencies.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, commended the Federal Executive Council for what she described as a watershed approval.

She said the decision clearly demonstrates that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration recognises the dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism of Federal Civil Servants.

“This approval is a profound acknowledgement of the invaluable contributions of our Civil Servants who have devoted their productive years to public service and national development.

“The Exit Benefit Scheme significantly enhances the retirement package of our officers and boosts confidence in the Federal Government’s commitment to their welfare,” she stated.

Walson-Jack added that the initiative aligns with the ongoing reform agenda aimed at building a more motivated, performance-driven, and people-centred Civil Service. She assured that comprehensive implementation guidelines would be communicated in due course.

The payment of gratuity to Federal Civil Servants comes 22 years after the introduction of the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The approval by the Federal Executive Council underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to policies that promote improved welfare while institutionalising reforms that secure the future of the Federal Civil Service.

There is something I really don't understand from this new system. So are they doing away completely with the Contributory Pension Scheme?
So since it's gratuity, it's like " dash". So if mu salary is N150,000.00 I will be going home with N3.6 million as gratuity.
That is not much money after working for 35 years.
If this amount is to added to the PF then no wahala.

God bless president Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR

You have really shown a great commitment to the welfare of fed civil servants.

I understand one messiah never gave a rat arss about his retired state civil servants and indeed, even serving health workers were on strike for over 13 months while he was a governor.

Yet he is jumping from one IDP camp to another busy lying to them that he is their messiah.

For salary of 150k monthly, the yearly earning is 1.8m, not 3.6m. What you will get as gratuity on exit is 1.8m, which is the 100%

However, note, the 100% is your basic, not with allowances. So you need to check your payslip to know your basic pay.

You are very very correct. So likely the Contributory Pension Scheme will run with the gratuity

Yes.

Gratuity will be given to you once, while pension comes monthly.

Gratuity is just a terminal benefit, for relocation or rearrange your life etc.

Gratuity is paid in cash into your account.
That is your take home cash in account/hand.

It is different from Pension.
Pension is a contributory scheme.
The employee pays a given % of his salary, the employer does same.
This is managed by a PFA.
As you exit the system, it is worked out in such a way that you will keep getting a monthly stipend monthly till the person leaves the earth or till the fund in your pension account is depleted to zero whichever one comes first.
It comes in at the end of the month, just the same way you get your salary.

Let's assume at the point of exit at age 60, a worker has N10,000,000 balance in his pension account.
The PFA can do the calculation in such a way that he keeps earning monthly till he clocks 80. I.e for the next 20 years.
That means he has 240 months to be drawing from the pension account.
Hence he keeps taking N41,600 monthly.

Hope this helps.

150,000x12 is 1.8m now. And you must not have worked for 35 years. Ten years of work is what qualifies you to be entitled to it

Your pension is different from Gratuity
When they retire, they get Gratuity and after that they get 50% of there pension immediately after retiring and done with documentation and they get the remaining 50% of their pension monthly till it's exhuasted

Bullshit.

Although kudos to this administration for bringing back gratuity after successive governments after Obasanjo turned a blind eye.

Yet, one year salary as gratuity is bullshit. The people who enjoyed federal civil are those who retired during Obasanjo's time. Despite enjoying subsided government housing, they had thr opportunity to buy the properties after retirement, they got huge payouts as gratuity, and they are enjoying pension for life under DBS.

Civil service is rubbish now

Try and be educated.

1. The gratuity is based on annual gross salary. So if your gross monthly salary is 150k, that means your annual will be 150k * 12 = 1.8 million. And so your gratuity will be 100% of that, which is: 1.8 million. So the gratuity is a reflection of your annual gross salary.

2. This gratuity is in addition to your contributory pension which is domicile with your pfc/pfa anyways.
