In a landmark ruling, a Special NDPS Court in Ahmedabad has sentenced two foreign nationals—one Zambian and one Nigerian—to 20 years in prison for their roles in a heroin trafficking case involving over 2.7 kg of narcotics, underscoring a strong stance against drug-related crimes.

Ahmedabad, March 10 (NationPress) A Special NDPS Court in Ahmedabad has sentenced a Zambian national and a Nigerian national to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a significant heroin case from 2021, as confirmed by officials from the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

The Special Court found Hanchabila John (from Zambia) and Nwaobu Christian Arinze (from Nigeria) guilty under Sections 8(c), 21(c), and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985, and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on each individual, according to an NCB official.

According to reports, the NCB acted on credible intelligence indicating that Hanchabila John was arriving in Ahmedabad from Dubai via Fly Dubai Airlines, carrying narcotics in his checked baggage. Surveillance was conducted at the airport in 2021.

Upon interception, a thorough search revealed 2.757 kg of heroin concealed in his possession, which was seized on September 3, 2021.

Further investigations identified Arinze, a 37-year-old originally from Umueze village in Nigeria's Anambra State, as the intended recipient of the confiscated heroin. He was arrested by NCB agents.

Following the investigation, the NCB submitted a charge sheet to the Additional District and Sessions Court in Ahmedabad on February 28, 2022, detailing offenses under the NDPS Act.

In a statement, the NCB emphasized that this conviction sends a strong message that drug trafficking will not be tolerated. The dedicated investigation and prosecution efforts by the NCB Ahmedabad Zonal Unit have played a critical role in safeguarding communities from the harmful impacts of drug abuse.

The NCB remains committed to dismantling drug networks, reinforcing its mission for a Drug-Free India (Nasha Mukt Bharat).
