thesolutions:That is because our primary source of energy, gas is expensive. You do not start your industrialization or developmental journey on energy from a key internationally traded commodity because you simply cannot control the price. Big markets, big consumers do. Most nations that made the tiger leap in the 70's, 80'and 90's did so on th back of coal. Coal remains the cheapest source of energy and I just do not understand how we can possibly develop without energy from coal plants. The biggest energy producer in Africa, South Africa relies up to 80 percent on fossils of which coal plants dominate. As the world goes green and coal plants gradually decommission the falling prices of coal should make it even more attractive for us to generate relatively cheap electricity to trigger our own industrial revolution. This will also enable us export 100 percent of our gas for badly needed foreign exchange. After a number of decades of affordable electricity we too can start utilizing more exotic fuels and cleaner technologies because we should by then be able to afford them. Our priority now should be cheap energy no matter the cost or we will never industrialize and never prosper. We just cannot afford the gas even we produce. |

[quote author=DeepSight post=138754818]Anyone who does not understand that power is Nigeria's biggest priority - not Coastal roads meant to feed corrupt people like Chagoury, does not understand anything. [/quote This is what I have been saying. We do not need that road at the moment. We have been having issues with power supply yet each successive governments give leap attention to this. No new investment to increase power generation beyond that moribund 5000megawats rather it keeps dropping faster than a speeding bullet. South Africa had issues with load shedding and the government invested billions and today the problem is solved. We just have complete idiotic crooks who are not forward thinking running the affairs of this nation and that's why we are heading nowhere. They are only good at plotting to rig themselves so they can remain in power for the next elections. |

These guys have absolutely no clue on how to build a nation. You can literally run a country like a big company. How can Nigeria with this population be this unproductive? It shatters my heart into pieces. When we talk, we're called "unpatriotic." Even a mad man knows well to feed the dog that protects him, and the dog in turn always stays loyal. Let's say these politicians are corrupt because I know they are indeed perfect saints, if you steal billions and billions of dollars, isn't it common sense to always take care of that "business" that feeds you? The world is quietly evolving in a pace that has never been seen before. Electricity has become as important (if not more important) than crude oil. Many youths are taking advantage of this to make money online and spend it in their home country thereby helping our economy. How do you expect me to pay taxes when you punish me like this? Why do I have to be always anxious of the light going off for weeks or months or forever when my counterparts in small countries like Ghana do not do that. What exactly is the problem? I get insulted and degraded because I come from a country with so much potential but still living in bondage. My country pins me to the ground and the rest of the world bites me for the sins that is not mine. God knows that I SuperOn.yi would first impregnate thirty women before stepping out to vote in 2027. I will rather drink palm wine, create my own electricity, farm, water — after all, I am my own president. |

You forgot to include Mozambique in your ranking. This is a country that supplies power to South Africa. A country that has electricity 24/7. |

ask4bk:Please stop blaming innocent Nigerians. Tell me one problem today that innocent Nigerians have caused. The major problem facing Nigeria today is mismanagement of our resources. Are innocent Nigerians to blame for this. So much money that should have been used for development has been stolen over the past so many years. This is the reason why there is no light, no water, no good road today. Imagine a former governor according to him from his mouth, sending $20,000, equivalent to about almost 30 million naira to a former president just to enable him to attend his birthday. |

Unfortunately this very critical infrastructure still continues to plague Nigeria in 2026. Without 24/7 electricity the country will continue to lag behind. This is really holding back development in the country. |

Reference:Rightly said. The best way to move forward faster is to lean back for a moment and thrust forward. Cheap energy is necessary. But who has the capacity to delve into that and sustain the annual power generation growth by exploring not just coal, but hydro, wind and solar. Most of these could be fabricated locally but government would prefer to allocate huge amounts for importation of these products and handled by foreign companies who would be responsible for maintaining same while they reap the benefits in kickbacks. In the end, maintenance cost becomes unsustainable leading to failure of the equipment. The best any government can do is to make use of local technicians and technology so that maintenance won't become a challenge like our refineries has been. |

| Re: Top 10 Countries With Access To Electricity In Africa( 1999 Versus 2023) by Lithiumite: 4:19pm On Mar 13 |
Racoon:Nigeria @ about 60% access to electricity still provides more access for more people than any country on that list and at lesser cost to consumers than some of them. |

Reference:It's because our leaders don't think There's nothing wrong with having gas plants when we have gas in huge supply. The problem is tying our domestic gas supplies to international pricing system because we want to look good to the West that we can also run a liberalised economy. Look at our fuel price for example. Nigeria's petrol price jumped by N400 when the war started while Saudi where the war is close by has not experienced any change in fuel price. Nigerian leaders clearly lack original ideas to steer the economy. They only want to please and impress the West that they are part of them. |
