1999 Presidential Election results was an Interesting one. OBJ a Yoruba man became the president without winning any YORUBA state. OBJ Results in Blue, Falae in Red. He won in North, South South and South East. It shows Regional party can't win a Presidential Election in Nigeria. You need national appeal.

One surprising fact is that since 1999 Nigeria's population has been said to have increased by over 30% but the number of voters remain static

Moreover, many Yoruba people believed Obasanjo betrayed Yoruba by declaring Sheu Shagari, the northerner the winner of the 1979 election instead of Obafemi Awolowo

His people don't support people with good intentions.

Obasanjo lost due to the Shagari election victory against Awo in '79 as many Yorubas felt he sold them out.

Obasanjo also considered himself a pan Nigerian rather than identifying solely as Yoruba.

His candidacy was also controversial as he was with the PDP, a party filled with Nigerians from other parts of the country with different agendas unlike Falae.

That should let you know that he wasn’t Yorubas choice, he wasn’t hated, he was not just our choice in ‘99

I was part of that election back then in Ondo state. I remember we all voted AD/APP alliance of Olu Falae/Umaru Shinkafi. But some other parts of Nigeria, including Britain and USA supported Obasanjo. Obasanjo did not even attend the presidential debate, a bad precedent which has now become a norm with all presidents of Nigeria. I still hold that belief till today that Olu Falae would have performed better if he was the president. Yes I agree that OBJ ran the best government so far. But if OBJ's government of political thuggery and do-or-die politics is our best so far, it calls to question the quality of Nigeria's leadership since independence.

Ignorance! He doesn't have to win any state, he needed just 2/3 of votes in 2/3 of the federation.

It's logically clear in the constitution that No single region can single handedly produce a president. You just need to have 25% of the votes in at least 2/3rd of the states + Your popular majority votes.

However, we should be more worried that despite 30% increase in population, Obasanjo's popular votes dwarfed the current president by a whooping 10million votes.

Obasanjo even lost his polling unit, not only in the 1999 election but in most elections. He also cannot deliver his polling unit to any candidate he endorses.

I will never forget 1999, when my landlords room was used as collation centers then ! Omo we make money die, every occupant rigged for my landlords party. PDP!

Olu Falaye was a failure who crafted SAP- structural Adjustment program that IBB implemented which threw the nation into hyperinflation & massive poverty(like whats happening now). Thank god he did not win, he would have been the tinubu of that era. Very few SW politicians are economically sound, Obj is one of them
