Stocks can be brutal. It's a no go area for a retiree' s fund.
Not brutal. The goal is to be ready for the long haul if you not an active trader

My ROI Feb till date despite not trading and flipping actively

Attractive to purchase but the liquidity is not really encouraging
With what they declared, it's expected. Investors want to share from the cake, even other REITs are getting attention.

There's a difference between “stocks can be brutal” and “stocks are brutal.” I said stocks can be brutal, and I stand by that.

Can stocks be brutal? The answer is a definite yes. Your paper gains today could turn into losses next week.

I don’t have to explain what is called a stock market crash. Something can happen today, and your stocks could start crashing uncontrollably almost immediately.

For instance, Oando traded at 67 naira in June last year. The price fell and, up till now, it has not recovered. Now, is that something good for a retiree who must rely on their investments to survive?

This same Oando once traded at 89 naira, and today it’s trading at 48 naira. Imagine if a retiree’s money had been used to buy such a stock at 89 naira. What would she have been surviving on for over a year?

I trade stocks too, but it’s not advisable for a retiree who is looking for something stable to live on.

Lol, the Nigerian pension fund currently has a stock portfolio in NGX. Stocks are not brutal if you choose the right one, NIDF is a great option for her.
Well, any stock can lose value, and for a long period of time.
Re: Mutual Funds by Nobody: 8:52pm On Mar 27
I do agree; however, some stocks have been doing well in the long run. If she goes with "grade A" stocks, she would be fine and also get dividends on the side while waiting for capital growth. Last year I basically saw Zenith and GTCO around 75naira and 90naira, Currently, their prices have gone up, except there is a pullback or financial turmoil; I still bet on these stocks to do well. Lastly, this is an MMF thread; it is better she seeks advice on the stocks thread.

@ the bolded;
For how long should a retiree wait before she eats?
And how would she survive if there's a pullback or financial turmoil?

Cadbury, Oando, Oceanic, Access etc were once considered 'A' stock.
Re: Mutual Funds by Nobody: 9:14pm On Mar 27
I think she has MMF, and her main priority is growth. Once the dividend starts coming, she will be fine. Diving into stocks, she has to understand it is not a quick money scheme.

Simply reconstruct as stock trading is not advisable for an individual who cant allow his/her funds stand the test of time.

Imagine an 80 year old granny bought Seplat/PresCo or other NGX 30 1/2 years ago and willed it to her son/grandchild b4 passing on this year. Will you still say not advisable for retirees??

Wanting something to live on by investing your 5m in mmf and soley feeding off the interest is also not possible in today's economy let's be realistic

You can't feed off mmf monthly if you don't have Hundred million let's be honest

Anyone with hundreds of millions is obviously very rich no need to complicate this
Re: Mutual Funds by Nobody: 9:25pm On Mar 27
You can't compare GTCO, Zenith, Stanbic, Seplat, Aradel, Presco, and Okomu to the list mentioned below.

I bought Seplat around 5300; I was impatient and sold it for 5700. Within six months, the price is now 9000+.

She has mmf which will be withdrawn and invested into stocks, right?
She will be fine, after how long? Someone that doesn't work again?

If you read the person's post again, her goal is not to will anything to anyone. She wants something she can survive on and stocks are not ideal for that at her age.

Of course, return from mmf is small, but If she can't survive with about 18k from mmf per week, will she survive if she buys stocks and the price falls?

Neither is mmf.

If 5m is all you have as a retiree your best bet is split into 2 and use half for a petty side business you can withstand the stress.

I never said mmf is her best bet, but stocks are definitely not for her.

Ok. When you get to over 60years carry all your funds and put in equity.

GTCO for instance reached 100+ last year and they reduced to 80±, that's enough to give some retirees cause for concern. There's a reason pension funds are categorised by age bracket to limit exposure.

Easy, bro. I never said she should port all her money to stocks. If she wants to grow her money, she can allocate a tiny fraction of her funds to stocks. Let's end this conversation.

But may or may not be tomorrow. That's the risk that shouldn't be taken by someone who cannot earn money elsewhere to offset the shock.

Cash availability is what guides your investment decisions

Even as a middle aged individual, you can't invest all your cash no matter how risk tolerant you are

The stocks in the NGX pension index.

This is either NOT TRUE or SIMPLY EXAGGERATED.

What are you eating Biko?

Except you are using 'feed off' to synonymously mean' live on'

I am trying to understand why some fund managers often maintain/upgrade their apps/websites on weekly or monthly basis, wetin dey happen?

They maintain their website more than we are maintaining our side-chicks.

Why can't they just build a solid and quality app/website and leave it to function for months or years without interruption.

I see SFSREIT being advertised on here, BE VERY CAREFUL to invest in that.

It's isn't about going into the market, Question you should ask yourself is: can you freely exit when you need money?

SFSREIT is not liquid enough.

Be very careful.
