I recently resigned my membership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Here is the statement I released on this.

My Fellow Nigerians, I write to formally announce my resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). I did not come to this decision lightly. For nearly two years, I have worked tirelessly within the PDP to help build a strong, credible, and united opposition platform capable of offering Nigerians a genuine alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

I believed then, as I still do now, that our country desperately needs a viable opposition to hold the government accountable and deliver the good governance that our people deserve.However, the events of recent weeks have proven decisive.

A recent ruling by the Court of Appeal has effectively nullified the PDP’s 2025 National Convention and its outcomes. This judgment has empowered a faction within the party that is openly aligned with the APC and is actively working to support the re-election of the current administration.

I will not be a party to sustaining this tragic travesty. The people of Lagos State, many of whom have waited far too long for meaningful improvement in their day-to-day lives from the actions of their government, deserve much better than that.

For a long time, I have advocated the importance of a united opposition. Nigeria’s democracy is fragile and now under increasing threat, so this is not the time for fracturing and division of opposition political forces that believe in accountability, constitutional order, and the welfare of ordinary citizens.

The need for opposition unity, especially in Lagos State, has never been more urgent than it is today, and I remain committed to working to make it happen. My departure from the PDP is therefore also partly driven by my belief in the pursuit of that united opposition.

I thank all those who stood with me in the PDP and wish the party well in its future endeavours. My focus now shifts entirely to contributing my quota towards building a stronger, more cohesive opposition that can truly serve the interests of the Nigerian people.

Mr Doherty contested the 2023 Lagos gubernatorial election on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and secured the fourth position in the poll. He, however, dumped the ADC for the PDP in 2024.

The ADC, previously regarded as a mushroom party, has gained momentum after Doherty’s exit following its adoption by prominent figures as an opposition coalition for the 2027 general elections.

Doherty, who had earlier declared his 2027 guber ambition, is yet to disclose his next destination after PDP exit, however people are speculating that he is returning to the ADC.

I am not trying to derail as this is about Lagos State

Yayi represented Lagos state for over 2 decades, House of Rep and Senate.

He should be fit enough to be the next Lagos state governor in 2027.

His supporters have been showing us his projects which I believe should help Lagos to develop more if Yayi is elected as the next governor

You can baptise it with whatever names you deem fit it doesn't change the fact that he changed party from ad to ac to acn to apc.

A close look at his letter shows that he intends to return to ADC.
Take a look at the last three paragraphs.

If he returns there, he will fight it out with GVR, who is trying to secure the ticket. With no LP and PDP in Lagos, I hope he does not hit a brick wall with his ambition.

I have always wondered what a brainbox like Funsho Doherty was doing in PDP!

He happens to be the last brilliant and respected personality in that party.

I can’t imagine him stooping so low to discuss party matters with the like of Seyi Makinde who still celebrate a door knob as the greatest invention.

Funsho made the right move! You might have love for a party, but when you can no longer find your league in such party, you just have to move on!

His Excellency, President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR) needs to be informed about these move IMMEDIATELY. The APC needs to get him!
