Personally I dont really have a problem with insisting on IDs to vote to be honest. But the truth is just that the way America is configured, they know already that the minorities are far less likely to have IDs owing to the fact that a higher percentage of them live somewhat economically shambolic and "scattered" lives. So its a thing they understand well. And they are doing it to diminish the minority vote, nothing more.

This example is always at the back of my mind when discussing affirmative action.

Nonetheless I am not sure you understand how affirmative action is worked out and applied in the USA.

Secondly in areas of particular expertise, no unqualified person can get through, affirmative action or not. This you will not find any pilots or doctors who do not meet the standards of the industry.

Thirdly and most importantly, the backwardness of the North in Nigeria did not arise from any lawfully endorsed past injustice of the state as is the case in America, where white people were legally given unmerited privileges for over a century. And black people were wildly marginalized and discriminated against for centuries.

Therefore the social justification is strong in America while it is not in Nigeria.

Finally, please know that the preponderance of Northerners in govt positions in Nigeria is not a function of quota system, it is a function of a Northern hegemonic system and a culture of Northerners directed towards public service roles and systemic dominance.

You have first hand experience with it and still act like you don't.

Voting in the US is done at a precinct level by people who live in that precinct. So, when I walk in I meet someone who I see when I go running, who asks my address and then checks me in. In that voting place, there is an armed local cop outside and a couple armed local cops inside.
The organization it would take for someone to vote multiple times is unrealistic. And you would be insane to risk voting illegal if you aren't a legal citizen yet.

Now, I am for security so I have no issue with voter id, in fact would prefer it. The problem is, can it be done in a manner that doesn't disenfranchise people.
The Dems had a voting rights bill that allowed for voter ID. But they also had protections in place so people could get those IDs easily and at no cost. A cost to vote is a poll tax which is illegal in the US because of its racist history or being used to disenfranchise black voters.
Voting is a right guaranteed by the constitution and should be treated as such.

Also, strangely enough this new Republican bill would disenfranchise Republican voters more than Democratic voters. Democrats are more likely to have a Passport(travel) and be able to get to a location to get an ID. So Dems are actually fighting for Republican voters here as usual but being criticized by the same people they are fighting for.

And lastly, the difference between DeepSight and you is that he speaks in a probing way. It sounds like he studies what he is talking about, has info to back it up and still stays in his lane on matters he may not have enough experience in. His goal seems to lean and grow his knowledge base. You talk like your word is the end all and be all of a topic especially when it's clear you really don't have facts to back it up or a firm understanding of that topic. It's the same thing Basilico and Bemeruca do in this thread.

In an area of expertise the qualification starts from the beginning, for Doctors, you have to be extremely smart in High school, get a high MCAT score, then go through medical school and residency before you can touch a patient. If the criteria for entry gets lowered for Northrners then it gives room for mediocrity and doubts to enter about the competence

When you enter a Hospital in Nigeria and see a doctor Adamu and start asking if they dont have a Doctor Uche or a Doctor Ade. That Dr Adamu might have been the best graduating student in Unilag but the hidtorical bias towards Northerners already created doubts, which is what Charlie Kirk was referring to

Part of the backwardness of the North stems from having standards reduced for them. When the South said they wanted independence, the North said they were not ready and we accommodated them until they are ready

The Northerners argument was that they are not at the same level as the south in education because the South had over a 100yr head start on them in western education

So they dont feel left out in Public service, we created a quota system in University admissions whereby you have to score 250 if you are from Edo state but if you are from Yobe 130 is enough

what should be done is that all races and ethnic group get th same access and are subjected to the same cut off and standards

It makes it harder for those who are not US citizens obviously. You cannot go to a bank and say you want to withdraw money, they ask for your account number you dont know, your name or ID to search for you and you don't know. So what proves you have a right to access the money? Nothing

Last year, I had to get a license with a real id that proved that I was a US citizen (you need that or a passport to fly now, I prefer not to carry my passport on domestic flights).
It was difficult. The next appointment was 3 months away and my license was expiring in a month.
I had to figure out when appointments got cancelled and stayed up (2 am) to finally get one a week after my license expired.
And because my license was going to be expired, I didn't want to risk driving (black man) with an expired license so would have had to get an uber (which would have been ~$50-75 to another location or get super lucky and find one in the city and take a train in).
I can afford it, can everyone?

The thing is that MA license that I had been using to open bank accounts etc. etc. with this SAVE act, I couldn't have used to vote as it wasn't a real id.
So people even with government ids they use for the things you mention would have to again get a new verified id just to vote.
Those verified ids would cost money and time off work if they can't get there on a Sat, which could be substantial.

Don't laugh. This is very very very very real. A lot of foreigners come here with business visit visas and start working as expats without a work permit and long overstay their visas. I know this first hand, I handled many of them as Head of Legal in a number of multinationals.
