Exactly.
The idea of racial or tribal quotas casta doubts on the ones who earned their positions on merit.
Simple question. If someone decided that NBA must have whites ,it will definitely lower standards.

raumdeuter:
Since you are a Nigerian and familiar with Nigeria, I will use the Nigerian example

what do you think about Northerners in Nigeria benefitting and getting placed into top govt position due to quota system

Do you think its good for Nigeria that some people have a lower standards to get into positions?

When you get to a top position say NNPC and see a Hausa person what does your mind first go to? Maybe that this guy is not qualified and only got there because he was from the North. In some cases you might actually find out that this Northern man was a smart guy who went to Unilag UI Ife Nsukka Zaria and came tops like Prof Jubril aminu

Imagine you got to a surgeon table and see Doctor Abubakar Audu from Yobe state, maybe something will whisper in your mind that Are you sure this guy will know what he is doing?

You see that what was designed to help Northerners now became an albatross on the smart ones where everyone now doubt their abilities

Yes, you have to get an appointment to bring your proof of citizenship.
So you have to Get proof of Citizenship.
1.) Get your proof of citizenship
-Get an appointment to get one
-Take time off to get one (if you aren't salaried, it will cost you a day's pay)
-Pay to get a duplicate one
2.) Get an appointment to bring in your citizenship proof
3.) Take time off to get the appointment (if you aren't salaried, it will cost you a day's pay)
4.) Pay for one
4.) Wait for the new id. If it doesn't get lost in the mail.

How much time and money would it cost to do all of that?
Again, you seem to have a problem with the details of all of this.
Your proof of citizenship is your birth cert which you were given at birth or your naturalization certificate which you were given at naturalization. (So which appointment do you need to get your birth cert issued at least 18yrs ago or issued to you at naturalization). Actually at naturalization ceremonies they distribute Voters registration document which you can fill right there

Yes you need an appointment to bring your proof of citizenship to licensing office. Every form of ID you have you need to take time to go get it,

Yes the job you are at, the ID that it needed to get it also took time to get it

This example is always at the back of my mind when discussing affirmative action.

Nonetheless I am not sure you understand how affirmative action is worked out and applied in the USA.

Secondly in areas of particular expertise, no unqualified person can get through, affirmative action or not. This you will not find any pilots or doctors who do not meet the standards of the industry.

Thirdly and most importantly, the backwardness of the North in Nigeria did not arise from any lawfully endorsed past injustice of the state as is the case in America, where white people were legally given unmerited privileges for over a century. And black people were wildly marginalized and discriminated against for centuries.

Therefore the social justification is strong in America while it is not in Nigeria.

Finally, please know that the preponderance of Northerners in govt positions in Nigeria is not a function of quota system, it is a function of a Northern hegemonic system and a culture of Northerners directed towards public service roles and systemic dominance.
Don't forget that in an election a winner is not declared on Percentage of registered voters. It's on who won votes cast. If 50% turnout the winner of that 50% vote count prevails.
An election is the more accurate opinion poll.
In jest, opinion polls can replace elections if pollsters were not biased.

1.) I have a N400. And know where it is because I lock it in my safe. To get my N400 I had to reach out to my mom for my birth certificate, who had to search her storage document boxes(most people aren't as organized to have them in convenient to find locations.) which took a while to get.
Again most people may not know where their birth certificate is and don't conveniently have a naturalization certificate if they were born in the US.
Years back, my boy(closest friend) hit me up when he was out of the country at his father's funeral, he asked me to go to his house(I have a spare key) and look for the birth certificate for his children.
Holy shit, took me hours (2 trips), looking through all the random documents he had in briefcases(his storage) in his office closet. I finally found them somewhere where I'm sure noone(I'm patient) would have.
When he get back I had to yell at him to get a damn file cabinet or safe.
The point, getting and finding those documents isn't as easy for most people as you would assume.

2.) Working isn't a right. Voting is.
You do understand the difference right?
You aren't supposed to put difficulties on things that are rights guaranteed by the consitution.

Ask people how difficult it was to get voter cards. I read stories and heard tales of people of certain tribes having very difficult times getting voter ids.
You have first hand experience with it and still act like you don't.
The truth is that I was not in Nigeria at the time. I was in Abu Dhabi - my second home. I have lived in there the last 14 years.

Voting in the US is done at a precinct level by people who live in that precinct. So, when I walk in I meet someone who I see when I go running, who asks my address and then checks me in. In that voting place, there is an armed local cop outside and a couple armed local cops inside.
The organization it would take for someone to vote multiple times is unrealistic. And you would be insane to risk voting illegal if you aren't a legal citizen yet.

Now, I am for security so I have no issue with voter id, in fact would prefer it. The problem is, can it be done in a manner that doesn't disenfranchise people.
The Dems had a voting rights bill that allowed for voter ID. But they also had protections in place so people could get those IDs easily and at no cost. A cost to vote is a poll tax which is illegal in the US because of its racist history or being used to disenfranchise black voters.
Voting is a right guaranteed by the constitution and should be treated as such.

Also, strangely enough this new Republican bill would disenfranchise Republican voters more than Democratic voters. Democrats are more likely to have a Passport(travel) and be able to get to a location to get an ID. So Dems are actually fighting for Republican voters here as usual but being criticized by the same people they are fighting for.

And lastly, the difference between DeepSight and you is that he speaks in a probing way. It sounds like he studies what he is talking about, has info to back it up and still stays in his lane on matters he may not have enough experience in. His goal seems to lean and grow his knowledge base. You talk like your word is the end all and be all of a topic especially when it's clear you really don't have facts to back it up or a firm understanding of that topic. It's the same thing Basilico and Bemeruca do in this thread.
Like this post.
You are arguing about how voter id worked in Nigeria without talking about one of the biggest issues, how big of a mess and how hard it was to get the voter card. And what seems like a deliberate, purposeful strategy to prevent some people from voting to game the election.
...read through all you wrote. Balanced views, learnt some new stuff. You keep at it like this, perhaps, we can be friends, so long as you're not gay. grin grin

Also, what if Trump's plan also include making sure that all eligible voters have this ID? What if he's got a good plan to start this. We are in the jet age for Christ's sake. Let them just take that first step. You all sound like "it can't be done" and it's got to be perfect the first time. I don't think this is what's on Trump's mind. He just wants some order around how things are done. Your hatred of and for him is blinding you all from seeing what's good coming out of this.

What about him? He's been a very fair minded guy all along. I think he voted against Trump in a couple of decisions by the Supreme Court lately. What's the problem? He's just like anyone. I like to not look at people based on their colour and stuff - but I also appreciate this is far from reality in many places.

Lol.....if you knew how much money foreigners make in Nigeria.

Are you aware that cars, technology and data are more expensive in Nigeria?

A car I would buy for 8,000 pounds in UK (16 million Naira) will cost me 25 million Naira. It would even be cheaper to buy a right handed car in uk and convert it than to buy the same car in Nigeria

Lol. There are two types of ignorant people in this regard.

1. Nigerians who have never left Nigeria and yearn for better life abroad. "The grass is greener on the other side".

2. Nigerians who have stayed abroad for decades and have no idea what Nigeria is currently like.

I understand because I move between countries.

Oil, technology and automotive.

All priced in dollars and overpriced in Nigeria.

How much does it cost to request a new birth certificate or naturalization certificate online?
Let me help you, in MA it's ~$50 for a birth certificate online and ~$500 for a naturalization certificate.

And then factor in the cost for a government photo id if you are using a birth certificate.
And most of these ids last 5 years. So you would have to get them replaced again every 5 years. Presidential elections are every 4 years.
And why would anyone carry around their naturalization certificate to go vote.

And this is all to fix a nonexistent voter fraud problem.
