Sam Altman’s Coworkers Say He Can Barely Code & Misunderstands Basic Machine Learning Concepts

Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO and the public face of ChatGPT, has carved out an image for himself as one of the preeminent AI whisperers of our age, whose influence supposedly extends to the White House on the strength of his ideas alone.

Or at least that’s the image he’s managed to cultivate. A new exposé in the New Yorker paints a different portrait, and it’s substantially more vexing. Drawing on interviews with numerous OpenAI insiders who worked with Altman, the article portrays the CEO not as a technical wiz, but as a skilled manipulator — and one with a surprisingly shallow grasp of the AI systems his company is building.

According to numerous engineers interviewed for the article, Altman lacks experience in both programming and in machine learning — a shortage of expertise that becomes obvious when the CEO mixes up basic AI terms.

It’s important to note that Altman dropped out of a Stanford computer science program after two years. We’re not here to shame anyone based on their education, but as the CEO of what may soon become the world’s most valuable publicly-traded company, the myth surrounding Altman matters.

Cast as the chief acolyte of the “god of scale” or as a “genius of digital tech,” he enjoys a kind of cult credibility that lets him slip out of tight spots that might ensnare lesser entrepreneurs.

Former OpenAI researcher Carroll Wainwright, speaking to the New Yorker, put it plainly: “he sets up structures that, on paper, constrain him in the future. But then, when the future comes and it comes time to be constrained, he does away with whatever the structure was.”

This knack for papering over technical shortcomings with boardroom maneuvers earned Altman a reputation as a practitioner of “Jedi mind tricks,” one tech insider who worked with the CEO explained.

As one senior executive at Microsoft put it to the New Yorker: “I think there’s a small but real chance he’s eventually remembered as a Bernie Madoff- or Sam Bankman-Fried-level scammer.”

When will they understand that his money is working forhim....

You think two years at dtanford studying computer is a waste?. He is a man with vision just like all others before him e.g Bill gate. School is just a vehicle not a main or necessary tool for him to get to his spot.

The Engineers saying all those rubbish graduated at Stanford, MIT, Massachusetts and they are still working under him .... BRQVO

Whether he can code or not does not change the fact that he is the boss

All, na the same. The man has whiz, and wits. He's the CEO, the others who think they have the skills, but don't have his wits and guts are LESSER THAN HIM.

It's very shameful to hear this coming from a tech industry, I be think say we as Tech people get sense normally.

He doesn't need to know how to code. Yet he knows enough to build a multi-billion dollar company from the scratch. That's more than enough.

What do we need the information for?

Does that affect the stock value of his company?
Re: Sam Altman’s Coworkers Say He Can Barely Code; Misunderstands Basic Concepts by SmartPolician:
What does that matter? He runs an ai company that is worth over $500 billion in private equity valuation. The entire GDP of Nigeria is less than $300 billion.

Perhaps he handles the business side of the company while others handle the technical aspect. Coding or no coding, Sam can never know poverty in this generation again

It's not new that you don't need to be technical to be the boss but it's also good to know the business in and out to lead the business. Why? Because na who wear shoe know where e de pain.

I learned from one of my bosses earlier in my career because he was a jack of all trades. I later realized that he wasn't but he knew about every aspect of the business. You couldn't lie to him. He did not need to be an expert in the field but he had an idea and that idea I realized took him far. People were afraid of him because of his intelligence but when they left he will just smile because the edge he had over them was that he understood how everything connected. Unfortunately, in the real world, it's not always the smartest that lead, they are the doers and the olodos then lead what they know nothing about.

The problem with intelligence is that it is not cowardice so those who are intelligent find it difficult to be asslickers. The asslickers get promoted easily because they can easily turn their back for oil to be dropped on it. The intelligent guy will analyse why the oil is necessary and he is not born a slave. Yes men get promoted easily, sycophants get ahead quickly because many of them lack principles and intelligence. At the end of the day, they also have a type of intelligence. Social intelligence. It's what makes them cunning and seize opportunities to climb on the pyramid.

The intelligent guy says the truth too often and is unaware that we live in the world of truthful lies. Keep playing the game along. Enjoy your freedom. Don't put too much of emotions in work. You are not your work. Play the game but don't worry about the losses. It's not objective, it is highly subjective. Never give them the power to define you. Never.

Just like Epstein, he was put there as a face for something sinister that will happen in the future.
He doesn't need codes.
All he needs is bone and grits.

He does not need to know how to code to manage a team. The aspect of dropping out is baseless. A significant number of tech founders in Silicon Valley are dropouts. Mark Zuckerberg was a dropout from Harvard, and many others, too numerous to mention. In fact, his daily activities should not be coding, but developing and meeting strategies set for the company's growth. They are even lucky he studied Computer Science; what about the CFO who studied Metallurgical Engineering? What has that got to do with finance?
