How Much It Cost To Build An App Like Uber Or Spotify by mayorcon(m): 10:53am On Mar 12, 2019
Please house, I need sincere and professional analysis on this. I have an idea to have an app that allows music streaming, a close example to that is Spotify, although there is a difference.

I also want to generally know the cost to build an Uber standard app by a Nigerian developer. I discovered that Uber like business could also function properly in unpopular cities too. Less atrocities will be committed in smaller cities.

I will be glad to hear from professional developers or programmers. Please don't ask me to send you email o. Drop your opinion hear.

Thanks.

I attended a conference and a TEAM from Spotify told everyone how expensive it cost to build and all the work they put into it for a long period of time.

The expense of developing an application like spotify costs $9000- $1500 approximately. But the particular cost of any app is depends on the various factors like the features you want in that app, the complexity of app, the platform you pick for that app, map in the app, etc. Unless you want to do a spotify clone app

Before developing any kind of app or software you would first need a plan as in essence what you are building is a new business.

So, I would assume you have that part covered and just want consultations on the development part of it.

The first step in building a kind of enterprise app like uber or spotify is UI and UX design.

This is important as your app will be used by thousands of people, your Ui design needs to be clean and easy to use.

Focus also needs to be given to the UX design as the success of the app will be largely depended on its usage the user experience needs to world class in order to encourage users to keep coming back.

It is recommend that UI and UX work be done by a good designer in Adobe XD or similar UI design software.

After the designs must have been completed and approved, the next step involves transforming the designs to usable frontend components. This involves exporting the design assets and coding up the frontend part of the app.

This will he done in whatever framework you decide to use to build your app. (I recommend and use ionic).

After the frontend components are completed and you basically have a kinda usable prototype of the app, then comes the backend development.

There are lots of options available to choose from with the rise if MBAAS in recent time but I would recommend you build out your backend yourself.

The backend development involves implementing all the business logic of the app and also building all necessary APIs to be used.

I recommend and use laravel and lumen for all backend services and hosting on a cloud server.(digital ocean is recommended).

After the backend is developed and everything wired together, your app should be ready for launch.

Also note that within the first 3 months, lots of changes might be needed as you begin getting feedback from your users and discovering what works, what features they like and want etc.

Development time could stretch from between 40days to 90days though more detailed development schedule would be developed when a detail project requirements is presented.

As a UI, UX and full stack web and mobile developer I can handle this project for you and would charge 200k for the completed design and development.

If you want a more detailed proposal and project requirements and specifications document, you can reach me on WhatsApp- https://wa.me/2349054832238.

Thanks

Whao! This is so detailed. Thanks a lot. But my concern is, why do we have so much difference in what companies charge for this kind of service, even in Nigeria. This same app that you can develop for 200k, someone said it will cost 500k, another said not less than 1m, another, 1.5m. please what's your take on this. Is it because I'm a novice, I mean I don't write codes.

Difference in cost is largely based on who is developing the app.

I am a freelancer and I will both the graphic and development works by myself.

Another freelancer might be only a developer and has to outsource the graphic parts to another freelancer which will add to the costs.

Individual freelancers charges are usually lower because their operating costs are lower.

Agencies on the other hand will charge higher because they need to factor in office rent and other office expenses, staff wages etc.

So general agencies will charge higher because their operating costs are much higher and they still need to make good profit in order to stay in business.

your range values need correction. Interesting hearing from d horses mouth. Read on Quora that it also cost a bit to develop. These things aint cheap (or as cheap as ppl think)

Laravel or lumen for an app that gets mad requests per minute? Nah, bro. I won't even look at PHP for that. A highly concurrent language would be perfect. Enter Go, Rust and Erlang.

200k ? Nah, fam

Php 7 that I still use? Laravel that I contribute to? You need to widen your horizons by learning at least 3. compiled languages then you'll understand .

Side Note: the uber you want to imitate uses golang.

There is no point for any argument. You prefer to use golang and I php. Doesnt make one right and the other wrong.

And I am not trying to "imitate" anyone.

And wrong ubers backend is more of nodejs and python.

Uber has Spotify has tens of software engineers if not hundreds. Trust me 5 developers wount build you an Uber there are lots of stuff going on behind those APIs forget what you see on the UI.

Now I'll advise you to articulate the features you want and the workflow for each of those features. Then the most difficult part of getting the devs who can actually build, deploy and run.

If you have a business plan you believe will work I think your best bet will be to partner with engineers and not hire one.

So I'm in sort of a similar situation where I'd like to stream content in an offline (non-Internet connected) scenario. An example would be a drug detox facility where access to the Internet is almost if not completely cut off.

I have come across a lot of fully functional and free/FOSS solutions with accompanying apps that I'm thinking why would someone want to spend funds building from the scratch

Didn't quite understand all you said but I think major reason why most people go for from the ground solutions is the uniqueness of the idea.

It would take more time trying to bend some open source projects into what you want than it would take if you had just built it up yourself.

My opinion though is that if there is an open source that very closely matches what I need then I just fork it and get going

So for Spotify for example I don't see a uniqueness in streaming music or video media to multiple devices/users. There's already at least one very stable FOSS solution (well it was Foss but closed source and forked twice). A proper Google search turned up several others. I would have mentioned names here but I get banned anytime I do that. I agree that it may initially be difficult adapting OSS for use BUT once you overcome that initial difficulty it becomes very easy as you can leverage on the community to provide functionality that a single person can possibly provide. For example testing which is very crucial. Or feature requests and additions.

I guess every developer has his preferred path.

For my project, think about certain cases where people need to stream videos from the Internet but cannot either because of poor connectivity (rural locations for example) or simply because the Internet is not available or is too expensive (if it's available) e.g a plane. I'm designing a solution where these multimedia content can be hosted on a local server which can be readily accessed via a WLAN. So using the appropriate app, users can access and stream preloaded content without having to be connected to the Internet

Advice: use the right tool for the job. PHP ain't the right tool for this

When I told you to read about php7 you felt i was insulting you.

Check out reactphp and amphp

Tip: Php7 + lumen + nginx + reactphp + amphp can more than efficiently handle any i/o or concurrency project.

See, when I tell you I am a php developer, I don't mean the mysqli function kinda guy. I mean the crazy nerdy deep stuff kinda guy.

And I would like you to tell me the problems I would encounter using php so I can brief you how php7 solves it.
