Outrage As Kwara Community Residents Reject Mats, Buckets From Tinubu Govt, Demand Rescue Of 176 Abductees

Residents of Woro community in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State have expressed outrage after a delegation reportedly sent by the Nigerian government arrived in the area with relief items such as mats, buckets and school bags for families affected by a recent deadly terrorist attack.

In a video obtained by SaharaReporters on Monday, grieving residents were seen angrily rejecting the items, describing them as an insult to their dignity in the face of the scale of loss suffered by the community.

The delegation was said to have delivered the items in an ambulance, claiming they were sent by the government.

However, community members refused to accept the materials, insisting that their most urgent need was not relief items but security and the immediate rescue of their abducted relatives.

We don’t need these things,” some of the residents were heard saying in the video. “What we want is security and the return of our people.”

The anger follows the reported killing of over 200 people in the area during an attack by terrorists suspected to be linked to Boko Haram.

In addition to the mass killings, at least 176 women and children were abducted during the attack and are still in captivity.

Community members said many of the abducted victims are wives and children of those killed, worsening the humanitarian crisis in the area.

The development comes days after SaharaReporters published a disturbing video showing the kidnapped victims pleading for urgent rescue.

The victims, abducted on February 3 from Woro and neighbouring Kososo communities, appeared weak, exhausted and in deplorable conditions.

In the footage, one of the terrorists, speaking in Hausa, claimed responsibility for the abduction and said the captives were being given a “final opportunity” to appeal to authorities.

We are the ones who kidnapped the people of Woro and Kososo,” the terrorist said. “We are giving them a final opportunity to appeal to the government.”

The victims, mostly women and children, echoed desperate pleas for help in multiple languages.

One visibly weak young woman, speaking in English, appealed to authorities and the public: “Please, we are begging you, this is the last opportunity they gave us. We have small children with us and some pregnant women. Please assist us.”

Another victim, speaking in Yoruba, called on both Kwara and Oyo state governments to intervene urgently, stressing that their lives depended on immediate action.

You see how wicked politicians can be. 176 people are still in captivity. Won lo ra eni oree, peli ati age (mats, buckets and prayer kettles). Honestly I don't blame them, but docile citizens. Some of my people are even callously supporting Tinubu, despite many of them paying ransom to kidnappers, who kidnapped their relatives. Absentee govenor who showed up once in a while in Ilorin. People need to be intentional about their future. grin grin grin grin grin

I'm even surprised that tinubu didn't include Rice to the useless gift

This shows how low the tinubu government rate the lives of Nigerians

What a useless president from hell.

The kwara state people have suffered insecurity since the inception of this evil government but all that tinubu could give them was bucket and mat because of election?

Like seriously ?

After all the wealth you have amassed over the years, age use you are close to your maker, People your age should be bothered about their after life and the welfare of people around them not in power struggle and amassing wealth.. That is how low they think of the populace. Giving them mats and buckets to keep praying, till bandits delete them. Deceiving people with "peanuts" while stealing their "gold".

Empathy and Tinubu are as far apart as any two things can be.

It obviously runs in their dysfunctional family.

The eyesore on Bourdillon Road
2nd January 2025

Beyond his neighbours, there is something about the sight of people hanging around a president’s residence that does not speak well of his leadership capabilities. Maybe no one has nudged him to see it, but the impression that spectacle on Bourdillon Road generates is that Tinubu enjoys the sight of suffering humans and thrives in—and through— their poverty.

If all these years, impoverished people hang around you and you remain comfortable enough to keep them just so they can be handed tokens of your large heart, then it means you have a pro-poverty mindset. Such a frame of mind is oriented toward cultivating poverty rather than stimulating abundance.

That is why he could unproblematically relate the story of his “friend” who went from using five Rolls Royce to a far-less valued car and not consider the import of the nonsense he was saying. That spurious account was an indication that this is a man for whom poverty—of others, not himself—is an ideal.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s first supplementary budget includes a fleet of SUVs for himself and his wife, a presidential yacht and the renovation of his villa amid a cost-of-living crisis for some of the poorest people in the world.

The proposal — which seeks additional funding beyond the annual budget approved by Tinubu’s predecessor — comes as the government asks Nigerians to persevere through pain caused in part by a raft of economic reforms ushered in by the new president. Africa’s most populous country faces rampant unemployment, soaring food prices and a plummeting currency.

Federal lawmakers approved the president’s request for extra spending on Thursday, but eliminated the provision of 5 billion naira ($6.01 million) to buy a presidential yacht. Instead, they doubled the allocation to a student loan fund to 10 billion naira, according Abubakar Bichi, chairman of an appropriations committee in the House of Representatives.

The lawmakers approved 1.5 billion-naira proposed to purchase SUVs for the office of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu — an amount larger than that allocated to many individual federal colleges. The supplementary budget also proposes almost 6 billion naira to purchase SUVs for the presidency — more than the amount initially allocated to fund a student loan program for poor families.
