Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has weighed in on the renewed push for the creation of Anioma State. He spoke on Wednesday during a consultation meeting with party stakeholders in Oshimili South Local Government Area, an engagement that also forms part of his political outreach ahead of a possible Senate bid.

At the meeting, Okowa reaffirmed his support for the creation of Anioma State but stressed that the process must reflect the collective will of the people across the nine local government areas of Delta North. While aligning with the broader aspiration, he subtly questioned the approach and motives of Ned Nwoko, who has recently taken a leading role in championing the proposal.

Okowa warned against turning the issue into a political tool, emphasizing that the legitimacy of the demand should come from genuine grassroots consensus rather than individual ambition.

The agitation for Anioma State—strongly backed by Nwoko—stems from longstanding demands by people of Delta North seeking greater administrative autonomy and fairer representation within Nigeria’s federal structure. Supporters argue that a new state would address perceived marginalization, enhance governance, and drive development in the region.

So because Okowa is seeing that it might come to be, he has started talking more than Ned who has been the champion ever since?

Even the name Anioma is Igbo. The people of Anioma bear Igbo names. If an Anioma person commits a crime whether in Nigeria or abroad, just his name alone will implicate the larger Igbo tribe like Nzeogwu did in the lead up to the civil war.

Why are you arguing what you know nothing about? Anioma can never be southeast because they are already inside the South-south,so when it is created,the state will be a South-south state full stop.

Igbos are naturally too proud to be dragging anyone to be part of them they don't have such history of conquering non igbos sen. ned nwoko and some anioma people are the ones trying to be part of the south east and not the other way round. If igbo means slave in ukwuani land then why are they still identifying themselves with igbo names? There's no way a northerner can differentiate them from igbos from the south east in the north.

If you migrated to my land as a stranger many many years ago, and grew to become many and want my land as a state for yourself...e get as e go be for my body and you should understand my reluctance.

But if you have always been on the land and are indigenous to it, and it was the modern partition of states that put your land and your people in a state where I am a majority....then it is a different ball game and you deserve your state.

Anyone that knows the history of the land and it's people's should enlighten us.

We in Asaba, our mother is Igbo and our father is igala, but we consider ourselves Igbo and hear our brothers across the Niger in Anambra.
Ndokwa and imo/rivers people hear themselves too. Ika also an Igbo variation is mutually understandable between ourselves and the average Igbo man but their king as well as many other kings in the area where under the overlordship of Benin by conquest. Sometimes even imposed, like Aboh despite being just a river seperated from ndoni/ohaji/egbema. The ukwuani are very close to the central urhobos as well as their ndokwa brethren and for such a reason are most resistant to the idea of Anioma state, talk less of joining the south east.

This is one of the hardest part people who always thinks breaking up Nigeria will be easy fail to recognize. The other time I saw the first lady speaking Itsekiri language and I could hear everything she was saying because her language was almost 90% similar to most Ondo State language. Does that mean Ondo people will wake up tomorrow and start to claim Itsekiri never but if the igbo try any nonsense to oppress the Itsekiri then I can tell you for free that the Yorubas will rise up against them. They are free to do whatever with the Edos but not with the Itsekiris.
