Bloody marvelous. I'm glad. Atleast Yaya didn't have to provide evidence, Send Akpoti gave him all the evidence he needed by doing that interview and saying things she can't prove. This is justice served. Let her appeal the judgement and let's see how far it will good. Yeah!. |

Her first political outing is disastrous Her first election as a senator is disastrous. There is no meaning contribution she made to her people instead she accumulates hatred, acrimony and financial losses for her constituent. In fact political scientists will use her as a case study adioolayi: |

Eriokanmi:She didn't provide evidence to substantiate her claims. What will she go to Appeal court or supreme court for. She can only appeal to get the amount reduced but I doubt she will succeed. How can she accuse someone without evidence. You people will always find a way to defend everything. |

*What the Lokoja High Court just did: ₦1B judgment against Natasha for defamation* *The ruling, plain English* 1. *Who won:* Yahaya Bello, ex-Kogi governor. 2. *Who lost:* Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. 3. *Why:* On Nov 4, 2022, she went on Arise TV ‘The Morning Show’ and called Bello a “murderer, killer, perpetrator of evil acts, and a terror to Kogi State.” 4. *Court says:* Justice A. S. Ibrahim ruled those words were defamatory, had no justification, and entered judgment for Bello. 5. *Penalty:* - ₦1,000,000,000 damages to be paid to Bello. - Perpetual injunction: Natasha, her agents or associates can’t repeat those statements on TV/radio again. *Legal steps that happened before judgment* 1. *Jurisdiction fight:* Natasha’s lawyer Johnson Usman SAN argued Kogi High Court had no power, said it was “abuse of court process.” 2. *Bello’s team replied:* Friday Ekpa said no other case in FCT High Court was against Bello personally. 3. *High Court said:* “We have jurisdiction.” 4. *Natasha appealed to Court of Appeal:* CA/ABJ/CV/626/2024. 5. *Appeal Court dismissed it:* Said appeal lacked merit. Kogi High Court could hear it. 6. *Case proceeded, judgment entered April 23, 2026.* *What this means legally* 1. *Preponderance of evidence standard:* Civil case. Bello didn’t need to prove “beyond reasonable doubt.” Just needed to show it was more likely than not that her words were defamatory and false. Court agreed. 2. *₦1B is massive:* Defamation awards in Nigeria are usually millions, not billions. Court must have seen serious reputational harm + no evidence from Natasha to back the “murderer” claim. 3. *Perpetual injunction:* If she calls him that on TV again, she’ll be in contempt of court. That’s jail or more fines. 4. *It’s not final yet:* Natasha can still appeal the _judgment_ itself to Court of Appeal, then Supreme Court. This only finished the jurisdiction appeal. Main appeal can follow. *Political context you can’t ignore* Natasha vs Bello is old beef. She ran for Senate under PDP, Bello was APC governor. She’s accused him of violence during Kogi elections before. He’s sued her multiple times. This ₦1B is the first big win for him. Calling a sitting/ex-governor a “murderer” on national TV without court convictions to back it = textbook defamation risk. Truth is a defense, but you need evidence admissible in court. “Everybody knows” isn’t evidence. *What happens next* 1. *Natasha’s options:* Pay ₦1B, appeal and ask for stay of execution, or negotiate settlement. Appeals can take 2–4 years. 2. *Enforcement:* If she doesn’t pay or appeal, Bello can start enforcement – seize accounts, assets. 3. *Appeal odds:* She’d have to prove either the words weren’t defamatory, or they were true, or covered by privilege. Hard fight. 4. *Chilling effect:* Politicians will think twice before dropping “killer” on TV without receipts. *Bottom line:* Court says political talk has limits. You can criticize, but “murderer” needs proof in court, not just Arise TV. ₦1B is the price tag Kogi High Court put on that line. |

chipet67:She don Appel already and dem dismiss her appeal. The Court of Appeal, in the appeal number, “CA/ABJ/CV/626/2024”, however, dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit and affirmed that the Kogi State High Court had jurisdiction to entertain the case. |

geoworldedu:Yahaya Bello is now obviously a special one and untouchable. This is when it becomes clear that Nigerian law has both eyes wide open. The EFCC case against YB is still pending and will drag till the next 10 years. But the one instituted by YB against an ordinary Nigerian is receiving expedited hearing. The case was ruled on, it went to Court Appeal and was ruled on till it returned to High Court and is constantly receiving attention. My question is, how come the EFCC case cannot move fast like this? How comes when it has to do with those on the other divide, the law will work very fast, the courts will have time to hear the cases swiftly Buy when it has to do with those in the opposite divide, the courts will be so busy that the case will get adjourned till they kingdom come on a steady. I don't support defamation, but check out how N1billion is awarded by a Nigerian court just like that. But when it has to with corruption cases where politicians stole hundreds of billions, the same court will award 5 years in prison or a fine of 5million Naira. We don't have a country anymore o. |
