the man is a mess....just like any other past president... Reverse the deal because of pressure from ur own corrupt people.... It's only a mad man that will save the country
That is how we roll.
The present government is under pressure by contractors for foreign loans to implement white elephants disguised as 'critical infrastructure'. It is all about interests and to settle political scores, government mercantilism.

I don't understand, is NNPC a god, is it not controlled by Citizens of Nigeria who are employed, how come they are more powerful than the Country who employed them.

All the past Presidents we had when the Refineries had stopped working are all rogues and God will judge all of you.

How will operating a National Refinery to work at optimal be like a rocket science for Country?

To all Nigeria past and present Leaders, God will really judge for the pains you are making us go through just because of your selfish interest.

Who should we blamehuh This useless old man was the minister of petroleum for 8 good years with nothing to show. Where is our 16 billion dollars electricity??
Re: NNPC Refineries Will Never Work Again – Obasanjo by Kukutente23: 7:46am On Apr 27
Number two: he said our refineries are too small. This was when I was an elected President. He said our refineries are too small. One is 60,000 barrels, and another is 100,000 barrels. He said refineries at that time were in the range of 250,000 barrels to 300,000 barrels. Number three: he said our refineries are not well-maintained. We call quacks and amateurs to come and maintain our refineries. The refineries are not in good order. He said, ‘Number four, there’s too much corruption around our refineries, and they don’t want to be part of that

I hope nairalanda1 can read through and see that Shell never mentioned subsidy as reason they can't invest in the refinery. All through, you can see that corruption and poor maintenance is the reason why they rejected the refineries
So he should stop deceiving himself thinking he's making sense by blaming everything on subsidy.
Ok now that subsidy is no longer being paid, has the refineries started working and when will the new investments spring up?

Pojomojo:
It’s understandable why former President Olusegun Obasanjo holds such a strong view about Nigeria’s refineries, given his past experience. But saying they will never work again may be too absolute—and perhaps overlooks what is still possible with the right approach.

First, the challenges he listed—poor maintenance, corruption, and outdated capacity—are real. Even Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has admitted the refineries are currently underperforming. However, those problems are not unique to Nigeria, and other countries have successfully revived aging refineries through proper reforms, transparent management, and credible technical partnerships.

Second, the global energy landscape has evolved since Obasanjo’s time in office. While major oil companies like Shell plc may prioritize upstream profits, there are now specialized refinery operators and engineering firms whose business is exactly this—turning around inefficient downstream assets. That’s precisely what NNPC is trying to tap into with its current search for technical partners.

Also, the success of the Nigeria LNG Limited project that Obasanjo referenced actually strengthens the case for reform rather than abandonment. It shows that with the right ownership structure, governance, and private-sector discipline, state-linked energy projects in Nigeria can work.

Then there’s the example of Aliko Dangote’s refinery. While it highlights how efficient private investment can be, it doesn’t necessarily mean public refineries are beyond saving—it simply raises the standard they must meet. Competing may be difficult, but not impossible, especially if the goal is to reduce import dependence and strengthen energy security.

In reality, the question isn’t whether the refineries can ever work again—it’s whether Nigeria is willing to implement the tough structural changes needed to make them work. That includes transparency, accountability, and possibly letting go of full government control.

So rather than writing them off completely, it may be more productive to see this moment as a test: can Nigeria finally fix what has long been broken, or will history repeat itself?
So na AI you dey use type comment? Abegi bro

You tried and gave your best to the country.
Posterity will remember you.
Atiku that you put in charge of privatisation messed up so many of them.
Thank God for Dangote refinery, we would have been buying petrol at 4-5,000/ litre by now.
Corruption killed NNPC, spending money on it is like a drain pipe. Better to scrap them and give more licenses for private refineries.
On this "Thank God for Dangote refinery, we would have been buying petrol at 4-5,000/ litre by now." Please stop giving credit to who doesn't deserve it. Most of the countries in Africa and the world at large I have travelled to lately that do not have neither crude oil nor refineries, government-owned or private-owned, aren't paying more for petrol than in Nigeria.

U sure say you go school so?
So tell us as Atiku was in charge of privatisation, was dis refinery not part of his portfolio?
Or do you believe Obasanjo today that he was in charge of privatisation?
Which means Atiku was not in charge of privatisation or how?
Was Atiku in charge of privatisation or not?

Safe to say we were defrauded of another $16B and no one is facing consequences.
It's tiring I swear... there's a guy I do discuss Nigeria issues with, he has a common line he uses to "defend" himself when boxed into a corner whenever I take him up on corruption, he will say "Nigeria is poor...", that statement makes me see him as being so so ignorant and uneducated.

Obj knows this nation inside out,the real truth is that Buhari and Tinubu governments have used revitalization of public refineries to defraud Nigeria even those they were aware impossibility of their workability. They squandered $16bn that was more than what Dangote spent in building one of the largest refineries in the world just on revitalization.

That's why an African adage says that what an elder sees sitting, data boys won't see it even if they climb Mt. Everest.
That's true ..

Re: NNPC Refineries Will Never Work Again – Obasanjo by nairalanda1(m): 8:37am On Apr 27
Something i say on this site is that the minute a company is allowing government to set its prices, that company is finished.

For over 50 years, NNPC was allowing government to set the prices of fuels refined in its refineries. And the sad thing is, we were warned in 1992...stop the subsidy, stop the price setting, but Nigerians, of all walks, even teenagers like me, all said no.

1994, the first TAM was missed
Also 1994, Abacha set up PTF, partially removed subsidy, and used the savings...on government projects, not on refineries.
2012, Nigeria was down to 91000 bpd from 432000 bpd in 1990.
2019,Nigeria was down to 6000 bpd

Even when Nigeria resumed the TAM, in 2008, it was bloddy too too late.

Most Nigerians seem to think that a business will survive when the government is setting its price. The fact is, IT WILL NOT. Corruption , stealing, deterioration, etc, are all characteristics of a company who has its prices being set by government. It has been seen time and time again in many countries around the world.

Calling me tinubu supporter, which I am not, does not change the fact...INFACT...Nigeria should have removed subsidy in 1993, even in 2012...which was our last chance, but we did not and here we are, and tinubu is infact partly responsible.

They are...only Angola, Algeria and LIbya pay less for petrol than Nigeria. All other African countries pay higher.

Angola self is planning to remove subsides completely by 2028. Algeria has issues funding subsidy. Only LIbya can afford subsides because it is a small country with 8 million people, producing as much oil as Nigeria with 230 million.

If the PDP which you support had removed subsides in 2012, and told tinubu to keep quayet, by now things would be better.

Seriously man, some of the people you support are partly to blame for the refinery being bad.
