I need the help of Nairalanders to expose the victimization happening at Abuja. Yesterday, April 25th, my proprietress deducted 50% of my salary. Her "legal" excuse in a letter she gave me (attached) is that I didn't work during the Easter break. Here are the facts that prove she is lying and victimizing me: I Worked: While the school was on break, I was working virtually on April 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. The actual break for teachers didn't even start until the 4th. Selective Punishment: Other teachers who were also off for the same break received their full 100% salary. I was singled out and deducted 50%. The Real Reason: She is punishing me because of a delay in lesson notes. Instead of a professional warning, she is using the holiday as an excuse to steal half my pay under a "No Work, No Pay" claim. Illegal Deduction: How can you take 50% of a monthly salary for a 10-day school break—a break that applied to the whole school? This violates Section 5 of the Labour Act, which forbids such heavy fines. I have been in the classroom teaching every single day since resumption. I have the letter where she admits to the deduction and my bank alert showing the half-pay. Is it now a crime to be a teacher in Abuja? How can an employer pay some staff and seize the money of others for the same period? Please help me move this to the front page so these private school owners stop treating teachers like slaves. #Nairaland #Abuja #Education #LabourJustice |

Hmmm.... You really should be getting ready to be fired. I hope you have enough savings. Because putting this here... Screenshots and all, is to some extent unprofessional. 1. Have you completed and submitted the Lesson note before the letter came - if you submitted, then they can give you a query for late submission, not deduction- since the work was done? 2. For you to be singled out, did other teachers also not submit their advanced lesson note? If you have already done your due diligence, then instead of using Whatsapp group to raise concerns with them, why didn't you go see them in person - and na so una own school be? Personal messages are sent to public school group? Blur out those phone numbers in your screenshot. |

Stephen0mozzy:Exactly my point. This is a dispute that should not be online., especially if the school has been performing their obligations regulation this is a first conflict. While I think the punishment is severe for the offense, it should be settled amicably and not combative, unless you have an offer of employment elsewhere. So Mr pauloscar300, find a way to take this down and delete before it gets to your employer. |

Honestly, I'm short of words. The OP was wrong not to have completed his assigned duties. Such tardiness attracts a penalty. However, the management too was wrong in her approach: it's draconian. How do you slash 50% from a person's salary and expect them to remain committed? Haba nau? All my years as a TEAM LEAD, I've never slashed a person's salary before. I'll only give instructions that it should be delayed until the person completes the task (that is after sending series of queries. Most management need to understand that being empathic isn't a sign of weakness. Your subordinates will move mountains for you if you show empathy. Haba nau? 50% of a person's salary slashed in that manner. It's outrageous! The OP needs to apply elsewhere asap, it's obvious that the management has deemed him surplus to requirement. They are about to pull a NICHOLAS JACKSON on him. #Picks_tooth

Relax my guy. I was once in your shoes. You are supposed to have a lesson note. If you don't write and submit it before the end of the week, it's like saying you haven't been teaching anything (even if you were in the class teaching. You can walk up to the proprietor and inform her verbally that you will be leaving her school and let her know you want your full agreed earnings paid. Nobody has the legal authority to deduct your salary for whatever reason. It took me a long time to realize this. If you leave that job, it's not the end of life although I must guarantee you things will be difficult at some point |
