It’s painful to say, but virginity is no longer seen as something to be proud of in this generation, especially here in Nigeria. There was a time when discipline, self-respect, and moral values were celebrated. Young girls and boys were taught to protect their future, guard their bodies, and understand that some things were worth waiting for. But today, the story is changing fast. Many teenagers, even students in secondary school, are already losing their innocence too early. What should be a season of learning, growth, and dreams has been replaced by pressure, social media influence, peer competition, and the wrong definition of “maturity.” Some young girls are mocked for still being virgins, as if self-control is now old-fashioned. Some boys are pushed by friends to “prove they are men” before they even understand responsibility. We have normalized what should never be normal. The truth is this: there is nothing shameful about preserving yourself. There is dignity in discipline. There is strength in saying NO. There is wisdom in waiting. Virginity is not stupidity. It is not weakness. It is self-worth, self-respect, and personal choice. As a society, we must stop making young people feel pressured to grow too fast. Parents must speak more. Schools must teach values, not just subjects. And the media must stop glorifying recklessness. The future of Nigeria depends on the values we protect today. Not everything old is outdated. Virginity is not something only women are “born with.” Both boys and girls are born without sexual experience. Virginity simply refers to someone who has not had sexual intercourse, not to a physical body part. People often link virginity only to women because of the hymen, but medically and morally, the hymen is not a perfect proof of virginity. Some girls are born without a noticeable hymen, some lose it through sports or normal activities, and some still have it after sex. As for Virgin Mary, she is called “Virgin Mary” because of the Christian belief that she conceived Jesus Christ miraculously without sexual relations, not because virginity is a title only for women. Jesus Christ is not called “Virgin Jesus” because the focus of that title is Mary’s miraculous conception of Him, not His own sexual status. So yes, men can absolutely be virgins too.
