Peter Obi 2027: Atiku and the Smart Road to Presidency – Opinion

Dear Peter Obi,

Don’t let them deceive you. The same voices that cheered your solo run in 2023 are whispering again: “Go alone in 2027. The South must complete eight years.” They are wrong. The South has had four years under President Bola Tinubu. The constitution does not demand eight. Zoning is a gentlemen’s agreement, not a law. Nigeria’s democracy is bigger than any gentleman’s pact. The urgent task before us is to unseat a government that has turned hardship into a national policy. Atiku Abubakar is the only man with the financial muscle, the political network, and the Northern consensus to do it. You, Mr. Obi, should run as his Vice-Presidential candidate. Not out of weakness, but out of strategic brilliance.

Let us be brutally honest. In 2023, you proved something historic. Millions of young Nigerians, especially in the South-East and urban centres, saw in you a leader who spoke their language—frugality, competence, and accountability. Your 6.1 million votes, though third, shattered the myth that only the two big parties could produce a president. Yet that same energy was not enough to cross the finish line. The reason was simple: fragmented opposition. Kwankwaso, with his own formidable base in Kano, chose ego over alliance. The result? Tinubu won with a little over 8.8 million votes while the opposition votes were split. History does not forgive those who repeat mistakes.

Today, the political arithmetic has changed. Atiku Abubakar is not just another Northerner with ambition. He is a man who has contested the presidency five times, built alliances across every geopolitical zone, and possesses the war chest to match any incumbent. His Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) still commands structures in 20 states. His business empire and decades of relationship-building give him reach that no other opposition figure can match. Tinubu’s government is bleeding support daily—fuel subsidy removal without palliatives, naira redesign chaos, mounting insecurity, and a youth unemployment rate that mocks every promise of renewal. Atiku can exploit these failures with the resources to fund a national campaign, something your Labour Party struggled with in 2023.

You, on the other hand, bring something Atiku cannot manufacture: genuine mass appeal among the under-40s and the South-East. Your personal integrity remains your strongest asset. Nigerians still remember the “O” in your name stands for “Obidient”—a movement bigger than any party logo. Pairing that moral force with Atiku’s machinery creates a ticket that is almost impossible to rig or outspend. The North-East and North-West will lean Atiku. The South-East and large parts of the South-West will swing behind you. The Middle Belt, always pragmatic, will follow the wind of victory. Add the urban youth vote and you have the numbers that Tinubu cannot buy.

Some will argue that accepting the VP slot diminishes you. That is the deception I warned you about. Politics is not about ego; it is about timing and positioning. You are still young enough—by Nigerian standards—to serve four or even eight years as Vice-President and then step forward as the undisputed Southern candidate in 2031 or 2035. The next time power rotates South, it will not be contested. It will be yours by right, earned through service, not demanded through stubbornness. Atiku, at 80-plus by then, will have completed his own historic mission of becoming president. The field will be clear. You will not be starting from scratch; you will be building on eight years of national visibility, executive experience, and a proven track record of loyalty to the ticket that delivered victory.

Critics will also claim that Atiku represents the old order. Fair point. But Nigeria’s problem today is not age; it is delivery. Atiku’s government would not need to experiment with basic governance. He has done it before—as Vice-President under Obasanjo, he helped stabilise the economy and pay off Paris Club debt. You would bring the fresh ideas: digital economy, youth entrepreneurship, education reform, and anti-corruption that actually bites. Together you offer continuity where it works and rupture where it doesn’t. That balance is exactly what a tired nation needs.

Let us learn from Kwankwaso’s 2023 error, as detailed in this column last year. He had the pedigree—engineer, two-term governor, senator, minister—but allowed personal pride to blind him to the bigger picture. He ran alone, won Kano, yet watched the presidency slip away. You must not repeat that script. The Nigerian electorate is not sentimental about solo heroism when collective victory is on the table. They want results. They want a ticket that can win, not one that merely makes a statement.

Mr. Obi, your Obidient movement taught us that hope is powerful. But hope without strategy is prayer. Strategy without resources is wishful thinking. The 2027 election is not a moral crusade; it is a contest of power. Atiku has the power infrastructure. You have the moral infrastructure. Marry the two and you give Nigeria a fighting chance.

The South does not need another four years of Tinubu’s hardship to “complete” its turn. It needs competent leadership now. You have time on your side. Use it wisely. Accept the VP slot, help Atiku win, serve the country with distinction, and prepare for the day when the presidency will come to you—not as a desperate aspiration, but as a well-earned inheritance.

The road to Aso Rock in 2027 is not a solo highway. It is a dual carriageway. Drive it together with Atiku. History will remember the smart man who chose alliance over applause.

I agree. The goal is to unseat tinubu. If Obi stubbornly contest, he would end up reducing Atikus vote thereby giving tinubu a clean victory. He should join forces with Atiku.

This campaign is intense. It is very obvious now that Peter Obi is their nemesis. How people can advise a man and try to shave his hair behind him is the 2027 wonder.

I think a problem our elites have with Obi is that they didn't make him. You know we have a lot of sycophants in this country so they always want to play a role in your life. So they will later say "God spoke to me to talk to Obi" or "I sponsored his campaign" or "he came to beg for ponmo in my house and I fed him". They don't have that agency of control over Obi or the Obidients that's why he's a problem to them. They want to play a hand in the role so they will feel important too.

I remember how this man was insulted last election. They gave this same advice to him. They told him to wait. They abused his supporters as online poll analysts. He didn't bother responding to them. He responded at the polls. Despite his impressive performance, given the little time he had and no Governor or establishment behind him, they still felt jealous that he could pull that off. If you want to know more about this, check previous election result. No new candidate has ever gathered the kind of votes Obi has. Sowore, Momodu, Shekarau, Durotoye, Ribadu etc. Have you ever asked why they don't give this kind of advice to Tinubu or Atiku? Or why they don't even tell Sowore too?

Be patient who those who give advice but be wise with what advice you take and use.

SixSeven:
Aside Obi and Kwankwanso, no other politician has been able to prove themselves ALONE outside the establishment.

Repost👇

Obi has the brightest chance going by the last election result followed by Kwankwanso. I choose these two because they left PDP and did not have the structure of the regular party, which Atiku benefitted from using the PDP platform. You also have to look at the time they had to test themselves between the election primaries and election.

If you want to know what that means, Ribadu ran the Presidential election in 2011 under AC and failed with that party structure. Obi and Kwankwanso have been able to test their popularity as candidates outside the regular establishments and done well. Both had no Governors in their party before contesting and pulled a good number in the last election. Buhari used his CPC to bargain with AC to get the Presidential slot in APC. Buhari could say whether he used ANPP or CPC, he could gather votes. I'm not so sure Atiku can do that. He was a presidential candidate of the Action Congress in the 2007 presidential election coming in third to Umaru Yar'Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the ANPP. Atiku came a distant third in that election with less than 10% of the votes.

Obi and Saraki/Kwankwanso

A Saraki will be a difficult campaign for APC that has defaulted to using tribes against themselves. Saraki ticks two boxes of Yoruba/North Central who have been looking for relevance since Gowon.

Here is the stats of the declared winners since 1999. Mr Bola Ahmed tinubu was not a popular president elect

Here is the brief, factual list of Nigeria’s presidential election winners since 1999, including each winner’s name and the percentage of valid votes they received.

1999 – Olusegun Obasanjo: about 62.78% of valid votes.

2003 – Olusegun Obasanjo: about 61.94% of valid votes.

2007 – Umaru Musa Yar’Adua: about 69.60% of valid votes.

2011 – Goodluck Jonathan: about 58.87% of valid votes.

2015 – Muhammadu Buhari: about 53.96% of valid votes.

2019 – Muhammadu Buhari: about 55.60% of valid votes.

2023 – Bola Ahmed tinubu: about 36.6–37% of valid votes.

A United opposition will defeat tinubu before the election begins. With a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiide margin. There is no need to argue about that.

Fact: Tinubu remains the most unpopular president to have won the Presidential elections. He is the easiest to kick out. Back then, PDP told AC, CPC and opposition parties when they were reigning that to kick us out, you need to unite as opposition. That's what they learned in 2015.

tinubu want Atiku to run for president.

The kind campaign tinubu Ibadan express media will unleash against Atiku will be unprecedented.

The only candidate that will dislodge drugie is PO.

We have all seen tinuubu finish.

2027 will be easier for PO to win than 2023 because tinubu had been exposed as empty.

The SOUTH must do 8 years.

That is sacrosanct or tinubu continues.

My problem with my dear brother Peter Obi is that he can never fight this people ( APC) if they rig the elections against him.

Allow those from the north who are ready to fight and kill to clear the road for you.

The are ready to challenge Tinubu anyhow he wants it.

Please try and apply your sense of reasoning and work with Atiku.

This was exactly what Tinubu and his people did against Jonathan and it worked, I don't know who is advising Peter Obi abeg.

But then, on which political platform? I ask because the Supreme Court judgment today about ADC leadership which we all were over joyous about seems to be a trap and in fact a Greek Gift cheesy

Honestly, Tinubu sabi politics wella, how I wished he was a good, detribalized leader the way he is in playing Nigerian politics, we for no de talk of opposition, every reasonable Nigerian like me for de campaign for him to even do 3rd term, sadly angry cry

Re: Dear Peter Obi, Don't Let Them Decieve You, Run As Atiku's VP - Opinion by AMINDA: 6:09pm On Apr 30
If Obi deputises Atiku, the election will be over by 10a.m and he would have solidified his grip on the North like Tinubu did after supporting Buhari. If he runs solo, he still complicates Tinubu's chances but won't get enough votes to win. He would only be running to prove a point. A point that was already proven in 2023. Tinubu got humiliated by Obi across the entire South, including in Lagos but he's president today because the North repaid a favour for a seed he had sown back in 2015. When he said "Emi Lokan", the North never disputed because he had a justifiable claim.

This speech by Elrufai at Arewa House during the electioneering campaign reverberated across the North and salvaged Tinubu's campaign despite the posture from the cabals. Tinubu betrayed the "Amana". Good or bad, the North remembers and repays every debt in FULL!

Yes,he should run as atiku vp. That's the surest path to victory. Kwankwso is only relevant in Kano. Besides, obi has Les support now and he can't get up to the amount of vote he got last time. I'll vote for him though.

Obi doesn't control the northern vote which tinubu is heavily relying on to win. Atiku has a better chance at securing those votes than Obi.

I am sure this person don't understand that mathematics .

The south must complete their 8 years. And as it stands now, this is not the time for a northern candidate.

So, the only viable brand now from the south is Obi.

I agree with you but understand that most people are driven by sentiment not reality.

Peter Obi will lose 50 percent of his supporters if he accepts the VP position.

Though in my opinion that's still enough to give an Atiku/Obi victory.

One sure banker is that if both Atiku and Obi run on separate tickets, then Tinubu will WIN.

But if they form a joint ticket or Atiku doesn't run, then Tinubu loses.
