My landlord has increased my rent by 108%. So instead of paying 1.2m I will now pay 2.5m for a 2bed.

That's above my budget. So I am moving out.

I wanted ask, is it okay to inform the landlord a month before rent expires that I am not renewing or is a month too short?

Rent expires July ending, so it okay to inform in May or June?

You can inform him on the day the rent expires; provided you actually park out on that day.

Unless you guys signed an agreement that you must notify him a certain time if you'll not renew.

You don't have to inform the mf. Just keep looking for an apartment till he gives you quit notice. He is a mat man. Some landlords don't have conscience at all.

Better tell your landlord you are looking for money for the rent. While you look for a new apartment. To find house now no easy oooo. Even when u have the money, u may not see your taste. Take your time.

Depends on your relationship with your landlord

If you're on good speaking terms, you're free to inform him whenever it's convenient for you.

P.S. Praying for you to build your own house. No matter how small. GOD bless the lady who advised me years ago to take the plunge and build at my own pace. Shudder to think of what could have happened over these past few years if I was battling with both children's school fees AND rent. My "Painful Exit" poster for don dey since...

You don't owe him any notice, live your life and take your decision. There should be laws incriminating these kinds of increment, how would someone increase rent by more than 100% that's insane .

I saw since last year rent has gone up...so I was expecting 30% increment but then I saw 100%

Most of these problems are caused by some over-sabi-sabi estate/property managers, advising landlords to build and sell than build and rent. Funny enough, they do this for content creation and clouts, and now the ripple effect is a lot of concerns for many who can't afford these costly houses

Still waiting for those zombies that would come and say cost of building materials is the reason for your house increment by 108% and how you should go build yours and put the price as you wish if you're unhappy about it🤡

My mum landlady has increased her house rent 2times in 3 yrs. I just dey look the woman from 1.2 to 2.2m for bucknor. Not new house but they have constant light

Even if you don't inform him, the most a landlord would do is give you quit notice to pack out within three months when you don't renew your rent when it expires.

i've not increased my tenant rent since 2018
Increasing it wont solve my problems and they've been great people. I got my breakthrough lastyear and am working towards a higher one this year. Everything is falling into place

just move out ,
but U must stay Ur six months before moving,
he must give U 6months and enough time to search for another,

What amaze me about this rent increment is that the houses are still old, cracked walls,old paintings, rusted zinc, old silings outdated structures etc. And they will still have the guts to increase the rent outrageously and when the tenant pay they will be no repairs or renovations on the house

Some of the so called landlords are religious zealot with heart of stone.

Don’t pack out in a rush, rent is generally expensive, you might regret parking out. Just be begging him daily to reduce the increased you might end up at 2m which might still be reasonable

Where is it located, maybe I will pay for it for myself.

Calculate the cost of getting a new apartment and the cost of renewing based on the new rent and see what favours you better.

Don’t misled the person please. No law gives you six months to vacate property.

After your rent expires, you are served with owners intention to recover property after 7 days. If you don’t vacate after seven days, landlord takes you to court. In court you tell the the judge how long before you vacate property which can’t be more than 1 month and you must pay the rent for the 1 month. You are not entitled to occupy a property more than a day after your rent expires.

Always get the through position of the law. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse.
