President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a 30 per cent reduction in charges airlines owe aviation agencies, in a move aimed at easing mounting financial pressure in the sector.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed this on Thursday during a meeting with journalists, saying the approval was communicated during the meeting with airline operators.

“So this evening, Mr President just communicated to us through the Chief of Staff, whilst we were at the meeting, that he’s granting a 30 per cent discount to all airlines,” Mr Keyamo said.

According to him, the relief applies to debts owed by airlines to key aviation agencies, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

He explained that the measure is intended to help airlines manage outstanding obligations such as parking fees, navigational charges and other operational costs.

The development comes amid growing concerns in the aviation sector following a sharp increase in the price of Jet A1 fuel, which operators say has significantly raised flight costs.

PREMIUM TIMES had earlier reported that airlines under the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have warned that the surge in fuel prices could force them to either increase ticket fares or suspend operations if urgent interventions are not implemented.

If this fuel crisis was happening in the road transport sector, all you'd hear is 'market forces' and 'subsidy is gone forever' 'subsidy is bad for the economy'. But the aviation sector affects ALL elites, they'd always find their way.

The debts owed by the airlines have nothing to do with the present pressures they face. The war in Iran has massively pushed up the costs of jet fuel. Worldwide, airlines are under pressure. Spirit airlines in the US that has operated for 34 years, ceased operations today. The cost of jet fuel pushed them under. Many more airlines will go under around the world.

Globally, Fuel typically accounts for only 20% – 25% of airline expenses.

Maybe no one has nudged him to see it, but the impression that spectacle on Bourdillon Road generates is that Tinubu enjoys the sight of suffering humans and thrives in—and through— their poverty.

If all these years, impoverished people hang around you and you remain comfortable enough to keep them just so they can be handed tokens of your large heart, then it means you have a pro-poverty mindset. Such a frame of mind is oriented toward cultivating poverty rather than stimulating abundance.

That is why he could unproblematically relate the story of his “friend” who went from using five Rolls Royce to a far-less valued car and not consider the import of the nonsense he was saying. That spurious account was an indication that this is a man for whom poverty—of others, not himself—is an ideal.
