It is his house. If you can't pay. Park out or you go build your own. Nauraland is not the owner of the house. When you build your own. Charge cheap for rent. |

Lanretoye:If you're planning to build houses for rent, you should have known you can't make the money back within a short period. Some of us are landlords elsewhere too, we just don't have houses everywhere. |

AAADE:This only suffice on their old tenancy agreement/contract. The moment the landlord breached the contract by increasing the rent, they are not entitle to any 6 month notice. Op, as a tenant you have options too: 1. Refuse and challenge the increase. By lagos 2011 tenancy you can challenge the unreasonability of this 100% increase in a magistrate court and the landlord cannot evict while the case is on 2. Reject and negotiate a lower rent 3. Leave on july 31 at the end of your tenancy without giving notice unless your contract / agreement state otherwise |

Ayo25:What you're saying is nonsense and you have no sympathy at all Increasing rent by 108% is pure wickedness no matter how you try to justify this wickedness, and you're here quoting stupid laws that the OP is meant to vacate the property within a month If a landlord can be so inconsiderate to raise rent by 108% overnight, he should be able to at least give the tenant 3 or 6 months to prepare his exit since he can't afford it But you're here defending the landlord and quoting rubbish law, saying the OP is supposed to pay if he exceeds the time his rent expired Do you people think others pick money on the floor? |

108% is likely to be deemed unreasonable ( unless improvements have been carried out to the property) especially considering the date of the last increase not withstanding the significant increases in repairs cost. A 15% to 20% per annum ceiling is the general guide I use for current tenants. If you can do 50% write (WhatsApp will do) to your landlord then follow with a call to discuss this with the landlord as a first step. Moving is not easy. You might have to consider mediation. Some landlords are being influenced by agents , fellow landlords in the area, rent on new builds in the area and if you have been a good tenant to date the landlord might reconsider. skultrick: |
| Re: My Landlord Increased My Rent By 108% by ericmor: 4:53pm On May 03 |
My simple advice for you is to negotiate with him, try to compare the house rent out there which you will get if you moved with what he is offering you and then tell him what you can afford. If you two can’t reach an agreement on price then start planing to move out and wait let him give you quit notice but it depends on what is in the agreement. If you want to use the tenancy law, he have no reason to increase your rent by that percentage and you can take him to court and he can’t evict you why the case is still in court, is just that he will frustrate you in that house. So think of what you want and do any of these. Goodluck |

You lack comprehension skills. Show me where I defended the landlord increasing the rent by 100% I only explained the position of the law to you. The law is not emotional. tosyne2much: |

You lack comprehension skills. Show me where I defended the landlord increasing the rent by 100% I only explained the position of the law to you. I didn’t make the law. The law is not emotional. You are only being emotional and you will put him in more problem with your advise. If he want to negotiate the increment, fine. But to expect to stay in the apartment for six months for free while he search for another apartment, the law will not support him on that. As a civilized person you cannot do everything with strong head. You na just strong head you dey, no logicality at all. tosyne2much: |

This is a popular strategy. The main purpose of the outrageous review is to frustrate you and eventually flush you out of his property. His agent(s) might have convinced him that they can bring a higher paying client. |

ariesbull:Tenants can negotiate rent with their landlord whenever there is an increase, especially if the increase seems excessive. In some cases, reasonable landlords are willing to consider such discussions |
| Re: My Landlord Increased My Rent By 108% by Ferdinandu(m): 7:57pm On May 03 |
The problem is that by the time you go out to look for similar apartment you will realise the least you can get is the same new amount Landlord gave you adding the mandatory expenses that goes with new apartment hunting you will be be spending close to double that new rent, then you realise it is far better to negotiate with your old landlord. You will always be at the mercy of landlord, the unpleasant reality |
| Re: My Landlord Increased My Rent By 108% by carzeem1: 9:08pm On May 03 |
skultrick:If the apartment ticks all your boxes, discuss with the landlord on getting a discount on the new increment considering you have never owed him rent your good behaviour and use of his property. If he is adamant on the new rent, then check around and get quotes for similar houses in that neighborhood, then make your decision to leave or step down to a mini flat. |

| Re: My Landlord Increased My Rent By 108% by CaptainFM1: 11:49am On May 04 |
DeOTR:The Landlord access the same market as you and everyone else. His children attends the same school as every one else. Inflation hits him just like every one else. Food prices increase affects him as everyone else. Hospital bill increase affects him as everyone else. If Nigerian government could increase petrol pump price by 1631% within 4years, an increase of just 100% in house rent by the Landlord is fairly reasonable. Think about it very well. |
| Re: My Landlord Increased My Rent By 108% by DeOTR: 4:25pm On May 04 |
CaptainFM1:No problem since you've based rent only on fuel price. He should increase it by 2000% then since that will solve all his problems. |
