The United States has resumed visa processing for Nigerian and other foreign doctors after quietly reversing a policy that had frozen applications under its travel ban system, The New York Times reported on Sunday.

The report said the earlier policy, introduced in January, halted decisions on visa extensions, work permits and green cards for citizens of about 39 countries, leaving many foreign-trained physicians unable to work.

However, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services has updated its guidelines to exempt medical doctors from the restriction, allowing their applications to proceed.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security confirmed the development to the NYT, stating that “applications associated with medical physicians will continue processing.”

The move comes amid a growing shortage of healthcare workers in the United States, where authorities estimate a deficit of about 65,000 doctors, a figure expected to rise in the coming years.

Foreign-trained doctors make up about a quarter of the US medical workforce, with many serving in primary care roles in underserved communities.

The earlier freeze had forced some doctors onto administrative leave, while others faced the risk of losing their jobs due to delays in visa approvals.

The policy shift is expected to ease pressure on hospitals and allow affected doctors, including Nigerians, to continue working.

Good move. Keep cleaning up your country. Nigerians should remain and fix this tattered nation, firstly by sending our corrupt leaders to their retirement home. Its sad to see Nigerians being bullied by ordinary Ghana and Benin republic, a nation that was once a replica of America in africa where everyone wanted to come and live. Who be south africa where Nigeria once stood?.

We can still re-earn our great position. It's up to you and I

They can't be allowed to cherrypick the best from qour shores and use them to advance their societies while we rot.

The Federal government should as matter of urgency put a stop to this sort of "raids" from a country whose president sees Nigeria as a "butthole"..

Nawa for USA o
A country that opens its doors only to doctors while shutting them to everyone else is not being strategic, it is being selective in a way that exposes its priorities.

Yes, doctors are valuable. Every nation needs skilled healthcare professionals. But reducing immigration policy to a single profession sends a clear message: people are only welcome when they are immediately profitable. That is not a vision for a strong society, it is a short-term extraction mindset.

Economies do not run on one profession. They are built by engineers, teachers, researchers, artisans, entrepreneurs, caregivers, and countless others whose contributions are less visible but equally essential. By excluding them, the government is not protecting its interests, it is limiting its own growth.

There is also an ethical contradiction here. Many of these doctors come from countries already struggling with healthcare shortages.
We have shortage of doctors in Nigeria.
Actively pulling them in while ignoring broader migration pathways contributes to global inequality, all while pretending to solve domestic problems.

If the goal is national development, then build a system that attracts a diverse range of talent and supports long-term integration. If the goal is simply to plug immediate gaps at the lowest cost, then be honest about it.

A serious government does not cherry-pick people based on narrow gain. It builds policies that reflect fairness, sustainability, and respect for the full spectrum of human contribution.

That's a good one. Please who knows when the non-immigrant visa ban will end? I really need a guarantee of success before applying/going for an interview..
Re: US Resumes Visa Processing For Nigerian, Other Foreign Doctors – New York Times by SmartPolician: 10:52am On May 04
Yeye people! I thought the ban was going to be forever. A useless country whose government is fleecing millions of dollars in visa processing (visas that only 0.1% eventually get) had the guts to ban Nigerians from their country! They must have counted a lot of losses by now!

Re: US Resumes Visa Processing For Nigerian, Other Foreign Doctors – New York Times by cyberbro: 11:01am On May 04
LOL... I knew this would happen sooner or later. None of the western countries like US, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany etc can do without skilled immigrants! The fact is that their system and economy requires a lot of efficiency so they are always in need of capable hands, but their population can never meet those demands.

When Trump was barking, talking about cutting skilled work visa etc, I knew he was poorly informed, like most white supremacists in America, they really don't know what they're talking about till they see the consequences, but pride won't allow them calm down and reason.

How? Do you even know what you are saying, the war in Iran makes USA more richer, ask me why?
Because many nations are now entering USA to buy their crude, remember also that USA controls Venezuela Oil. So tell me, how is USA broke?
