Please, for POF, the travel expenses will be for return ticket or just one way ticket?

JMG12:
1. There are various platforms, such as Flywire, PayMyTuition Fee, AlliancePrime, etc.
2. I will recommend that you have the complete two-year funds accessible. If you don't have the 2yrs funds available, then you can show 1 year's funds and explain how you intend to finance your second year (When doing this, don't tell them you will work to offset your bills).

Hello all

A friend student's visa application just got rejected now. Kindly help with any information on what step we can follow to either appeal or reapply. I attached the refusal letter below.

Thank you.

Good morning. I don't know if I should say I am new here because I've been following this platform since last year and have been able to get my admission from the posts I read here. Kudos to Soltech1000, Okonkwobestman1, Sopwriter, Gloriousange. I read all of you posts one by one. I want to start my visa and I have questions.

1 We are family of 4 and all our children are minors. If the money is not the problem, would you advise me to leave my family behind or apply with them?
2 Will my wife and children need their own PAL?

Thank you
To confirm if you are eligible to bring your family with you, please state your proposed academic qualification.

undespicable:
Yes I can explain to them I have a job, I plan to attach my recent payslips (maybe 4 or 6 months payslips), employment contract, bank statement for 6 months, and bank certificate, I'm sure I'll be able to raise the 9k by September or close to 9k. Aside from these are there any other documents you think I should add for the POF? Or these are sufficient enough for POF?

Thanks for this, much appreciated 🙏
You are on the right track. Just a suggestion off the top of my mind add your 2 or 3 years of tax returns if possible. Two years should be okay, but more than two is even better....it shows that you have made a good income overtime and that money your have saved is from that income Also, make your bank statement cover at least 6 months.

Have you paid the acceptance fee for your admission? It is normally around 15% of your first-year tuition, as most schools ask for it.

If not, ask your school if you can make an initial payment before anything else. They will also tell you the exact amount to pay.

Do not overpay. There is a reason for that. With the school payment receipt, include the receipt in your application and also show that the payment came from your income. It should reflect in your bank statement, so point it out clearly.

Also include your residence permit for the country you are currently staying in. Anything you can show to prove that you obey rules and regulations and that you are legally residing in your current country will help.

I wish you all the best.

Hi everyone, new to this thread. Please bear with me.

I'm a working professional in Lagos, currently in the tech industry. I've been seriously planning to relocate to Canada through the student route — targeting a Masters programme for September 2027 intake. I've done some research but honestly the whole process feels overwhelming and I'd love to hear from people who have actually gone through it successfully.

Specifically looking for real-world guidance on:

IELTS — Academic or General? Where did you register in Lagos? Any prep tips?
WES — How long did yours actually take? Any wahala with Nigerian universities sending transcripts?
University application — How did you handle the statement of purpose? References?
Student visa — What did your proof of funds look like? Any refusals or issues?
Travel and arrival — First weeks in Canada, what do you wish you knew?
Settling in — SIN, bank account, accommodation — how did you sort these out?

I'm fully self-funded so financing isn't the issue. Just want to understand the realistic timeline and avoid the common mistakes people make.
If you've been through this process successfully — or even if you're currently in it — please share your experience. I'll be very grateful.

Thank you.

I've done some research but honestly the whole process feels overwhelming and I'd love to hear from people who have actually gone through it successfully.

Specifically looking for real-world guidance on:

IELTS — Academic or General? Where did you register in Lagos? Any prep tips? Watch YT videos
WES — How long did yours actually take? Any wahala with Nigerian universities sending transcripts? My transcript took less than two weeks. That's because I sorted.
University application — How did you handle the statement of purpose? References? You should know your reason of choosing the school, the course, the country, your goal. So you should know what to write. As for ref, your boss in your office can do that. Mine they requested for two ref either Academic(ur school) or from workplace.
Student visa — What did your proof of funds look like? Any refusals or issues? My POF is more than the estimated funds for the years I will stay in Canada. This gives an edge. If it will cost you $20k to stay and study in Canada till you graduate, try and show VO $30k as POF
Travel and arrival — First weeks in Canada, what do you wish you knew? I will be here in Oct to answer this part
Settling in — SIN, bank account, accommodation — how did you sort these out? Use FB market place to sort for accommodation and to be on a safer side contact ur school they will link u will partners or on-campus accommodation. Do not pay any agent to get you a place o. Dont pay if u have not verify the house. As for Bank, depending on ur school. the school always link new students to a dept or indivuals to assist them get their banks and sim cards setup.

I'm fully self-funded so financing isn't the issue. Just want to understand the realistic timeline and avoid the common mistakes people make.

IELTS — Academic or General? Where did you register in Lagos? Any prep tips? you do not need for student visa most school wave IELTS for Nigerians email the school and ask before applying
WES — How long did yours actually take? Any wahala with Nigerian universities sending transcripts? you do not need WES evaluation for student visa and you would need your bSc to send your transcript so no one knows your University system but just try its your transcript they will do it for a fee
University application — How did you handle the statement of purpose? References? when you are applying for admission you will write it you are thinking so much and for reference some school ask for 3 reference I used my place of work for 2 and a lecturer I was cool with for the last one...you surely have people you can use
Student visa — What did your proof of funds look like? Any refusals or issues? apply for a school you can afford
Travel and arrival — First weeks in Canada, what do you wish you knew? if you keep worrying about this you will never leave nigeria
Settling in — SIN, bank account, accommodation — how did you sort these out? get your visa first you will worry about this later just apply for a school you can afford

If you overthink the process, you will always feel overwhelmed. You need to take things one step at a time.

Yes, it’s good to think about settling in and everything else, but first you need to focus on getting admission and making sure you can afford your fees before even applying for a visa.

So take it one step at a time. FYI, most university portals for the September 2027 intake have already closed or are about to close. If you keep overthinking, you won’t move forward and you’ll only fill your heart with worry.

Right now, your main focus should be getting your transcript from your Nigerian University and getting admission into a school you can afford. That is the first step.

If you try to focus on everything at once, you will get nowhere.

Two universities I know that are among the cheapest for international students in Canada are Brandon University and Memorial University of Newfoundland. Check if their portals are still open, get your BSc transcript ready, review the requirements for a course you like, and apply.

Some of the schools I applied to in Canada requested for IELTS. even in the visa application it is asked.

The study permit processing time for Nigeria has been reduced from 8 weeks to 5 weeks.

@ amnotapervert what's your take on that?

That’s why you should email the admission office before applying. Some Canadian school accept an English Proficiency Letter from your Nigerian university, and that can be enough for the Canadian university.

Many schools have a condition stating that if you do not have IELTS, you can provide proof that your previous education was taught in English. So always confirm directly with the school before spending money on IELTS or the application process

I am aware of this information. Some schools accept WASSCE. The school I am going, I sent them WASSCE they rejected it. Some schools like the University of Nagara Falls wave English Test for Nigerians.

Thank you. Are you familiar with all finance solutions like Raenest (formely Geegpay) that remote workers use to receive USD or EUR salary and also offer virtual USD card services for online payments?

If for example, I have my savings in USD on such platforms, are their bank statements acceptable for POF?

@ amnotapervert what's your take on that?
HAhaha, I don’t know. Maybe its one of this 3 things or everything

(1) the number of people applying for study permits from Nigeria has reduced,

(2) IRCC is becoming more effective and efficient by using new tools

(3) or hiring more staff.

Although, with the current government running a deficit, I doubt they would want to hire too many more people, so I think they are mostly improving their systems and using better tools.

On May 4, 2026, the Minister of Immigration confirmed that Canada is implementing a new system to track whether temporary residents, including international students, leave when their visas expire. I clipped this from the news https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-pilot-program-tracking-temporary-foreign-residents-leaving-permits/

It’s actually crazy that they didn’t already have this system in place initially, but it shows they are building more in-house tools to become more effective and efficient . I believe that’s a good thing. All things being equal, it should help make visa processing faster.
