In 1976, a Nigerian 🇳🇬 judge was arrested over a N20 bribe

A better Nigeria is possible. Fellow Nigerians, I am touched and wish to Appeal that we all vote wisely come 2027.

Enough of recycled politicians. We must vote the best to return Nigeria back to the oromise land.

We must put religion, ethnicity, sentiment aside and vote wisely.

A better Nigeria is All we want.

Back then N20 was equivalent to around today's N30 000. Try bribing a judge today with N30 000 .I guarantee he will see it as a big insult and somehow get you arrested and remanded indefinitely.

Today's judges hobnob with politicians and they are allocated plots of land in high eyebrow areas of different cities in Nigeria. Many judges today take huge bribes and use adjournments to frustrate justice.

Using Nigeria’s historical inflation trends, ₦20 in 1976 would have roughly the same purchasing power as between ₦150,000 and ₦300,000+ in 2026 depending on the inflation dataset and method used.

For context:
In 1976, ₦20 was a significant amount of money in Nigeria.
Back then, the naira was very strong and could buy large quantities of food, fuel, and household goods.
Over 50 years of inflation and currency devaluation greatly reduced the naira’s purchasing power.
Trading Economics +1
A practical way to think about it:
₦20 in 1976 could cover expenses that today might require hundreds of thousands of naira.
