bigsam75:Given my own experience, I ran a full time M.Sc degree in a federal university while also running another full Time Post Graduate course in another federal institution and I graduated from both. I was careful not to run both programmes in the same institution concurrently.# I would advice you not to run a full time course and another course concurrently in the same institution. You legally can't run another course once you are on a full time programme in that same university. This much know because the institution can terminate one or both programmes. |

theophorus:You well so? How can a postgraduate student continue with his undergraduate matric number? You have absolutely no idea what you talking about. You are watching too many Nollywood movies because academia is nothing like that and Britishpea tried to correct you but you refused to listen. |

bigsam75:According to Chatgpt: Yes, it is possible in Nigeria, but it depends on the university’s regulations and the mode of study involved. In most Nigerian universities, there are three main issues: 1. Matriculation status 2. Full-time registration rules 3. NYSC implications Generally: You can use an already completed B.Sc degree to apply for an M.Sc. But many universities do not allow a student to run two full-time degree programmes simultaneously within the same institution. Some institutions may allow it if one programme is part-time, sandwich, distance learning, or executive. For example: If you already have a B.Sc in Biology and are now studying MBBS full-time, some universities may still permit you to enroll in an M.Sc — especially if the M.Sc is: part-time, coursework-light, research-based, or externally supervised. However, if both are officially classified as full-time programmes, problems can arise with: Senate registration, student records, course clashes, hostel/student status, and examination eligibility. In practice in Nigeria: Some schools quietly tolerate it. Others strictly prohibit it once discovered. Policies are often enforced inconsistently. A few additional realities: Postgraduate schools are sometimes more flexible than undergraduate registries. Professional programmes (Medicine, Law, Pharmacy) often have stricter attendance requirements. Funding/scholarship bodies may prohibit dual enrolment even when the university itself does not. The safest route is usually: Full-time first degree + part-time M.Sc or Full-time first degree + research M.Sc with minimal physical coursework. You would need to check: the Postgraduate School regulations, your faculty handbook, and the Academic Planning Unit of the university involved. Examples of universities where policies may differ include: University of Ibadan University of Lagos Obafemi Awolowo University Ahmadu Bello University Legally, there is no general Nigerian law outright banning it. The restriction is mainly institutional and administrative. |
