Bolaji Abdullahi, national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, once threatened to quit the party over what he described as the “pampering” of Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP).

Abdullahi spoke during an interview with Symfoni TV via YouTube on Thursday.

The ADC spokesperson was reacting to Obi’s claim that “internal battles, endless court cases and uncertainties over the party’s future” informed his decision to leave the party on May 3 for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), alongside Rabiu Kwankwaso, ex-governor of Kano.

Abdullahi said Obi lacks the moral standing to make such a claim against the ADC, noting that he enjoyed more privileges than any other opposition coalition leader during his time in the party.

He added that the preferential treatment accorded Obi once prompted Amaechi to complain to David Mark, the ADC national chairman, accusing the party leadership of making too many concessions to the former governor of Anambra.

“There was a time Amaechi went to ADC national chairman David Mark and was threatening to leave the party because the ADC was pampering Peter Obi and that he was conceding everything to Obi,” Abdullahi said.

“I had two deputies under me, and one was nominated by Peter Obi. Amaechi and Atiku can’t point at anybody they nominated in the NWC. The national organising secretary was a Peter Obi man.

“Before Obi joined the coalition, we had other people like Osita Chidoka working hard for the coalition building.

“He was hoping to be the national organising secretary, but when Obi came, and in order to give him a sense of belonging, we gave that position to Obi to nominate someone.

“And there are several other people holding party positions that he nominated. That was how we lost Osita.”

Abdullahi said the ADC leadership deliberately made concessions to Obi, believing that inclusiveness was necessary for coalition politics.

Many questioned why we gave Obi such privileges, but it’s because we recognised that politics is a game of additions, and if we have to make some concessions that are not going to kill anybody, then we have to make them,” he said.

“So, if anybody should be complaining of a toxic environment or marginalisation within the party, I don’t think it should be Obi.”

He further dismissed claims that the ADC is being controlled by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

“Obi and Kwankwaso probably yielded to the propaganda that ADC is an Atiku party. That is simply not true,” he said.

Abdullahi also criticised the current administration, accusing governors of “criminal diversion” of federal allocation funds for President Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

“Governors are diverting funds from the federation account for a presidential campaign. That is a shameless and criminal act,” he said.

He further criticised the judiciary, alleging that some government agents had compromised public trust in the institution.

“Some government agents have turned the judiciary into a disgrace. The people no longer trust it — they see it as an extension of the federal government,” he said.

.. peter obi left because of endless court cases..court cases that have not yet been resolved.. remember the supreme court told ADC to go back to the federal high court for determination to conclude their court case...so all this court case will cause delays and uncertainty for the party and party members...you cannot stay in a party where court cases that are not yet resolved or settled can spoil your presidential ambition

Tinubu face greater challenges even from his closest circle that want to betray him, he stood his ground and fought bravely. That's mark of leadership with strength even though I don't approve to some of his policy lately.

Now if NDC have another cour case or problem ,he will run to where abeg. LP have problem he comot there, ADC have problem he rum comot again. That's a trait of a coward leader conformed one. This is someone that want to fix Nigeria with multidimensional problems battling us.

Like always he still has a lot to learn about leadership, he should deputize Atiku to crush Tinubu, then learn the rope and after 8 years he will fit for president. Now he's just wasting vote and helping Tinubu to stay in power.

tinubu could wrestle his way because he's as dirty as those people if not worst.

Two things are certain to happen in ADC

1. Atiku will get the ticket using transactional politic
2. The court cases will not cease.

One thing PO has shown with his move from ADC to NDC is that he's not desperate to be the president and he'd always do the right thing.

Aside Obi and Kwankwanso, no other politician has been able to prove themselves ALONE outside the establishment.

Obi has the brightest chance going by the last election result followed by Kwankwanso. I choose these two because they left PDP and did not have the structure of the regular party, which Atiku benefitted from using the PDP platform. You also have to look at the time they had to test themselves between the election primaries and election.

If you want to know what that means, Ribadu ran the Presidential election in 2011 under AC and failed with that party structure. Obi and Kwankwanso have been able to test their popularity as candidates outside the regular establishments and done well. Both had no Governors in their party before contesting and pulled a good number in the last election. Buhari used his CPC to bargain with AC to get the Presidential slot in APC. Buhari could say whether he used ANPP or CPC, he could gather votes. I'm not so sure Atiku can do that. He was a presidential candidate of the Action Congress in the 2007 presidential election coming in third to Umaru Yar'Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the ANPP. Atiku came a distant third in that election with less than 10% of the votes.


Obi and Saraki/Kwankwanso

A Saraki will be a difficult campaign for APC that has defaulted to using tribes against themselves. Saraki ticks two boxes of Yoruba/North Central who have been looking for relevance since Gowon.

A United opposition will defeat tinubu before the election begins. With a wiiiiiiiiiiiiiide margin. There is no need to argue about that.

Fact: Tinubu remains the most unpopular president to have won the Presidential elections. He is the easiest to kick out. Back then, PDP told AC, CPC and opposition parties when they were reigning that to kick us out, you need to unite as opposition. That's what they learned in 2015.
