I am happy to agree that climate, topography, and the like all play a role. What is scientifically and anthropologically true cannot be waved aside - that does not imply that anyone is making excuses or avoiding any responsibility. Responsibility, at all events, CANNOT be avoided - no one is coming to fix life for anyone else - each must "work out his salvation with fear and trembling" if I may borrow that phrase from scripture. And indeed as tumultuous as our situation is in Africa, the truth is that we are on the way.

We just tend not to see it so well because of the ups and downs and the madness and the scattered nature of our progress. The hideous corruption, the waste, the illiteracy and all that. But think about it. What do you realistically expect?
