GTB has a reputation to be a bank of integrity, and I used to believe that they are. However, recent issues have made me seriously question their honesty as a bank.

This issue is so long and disheartening, but I am giving them some grace before I expose them. I am sure they will read this and be alarmed.

So let me wait a while before I relate my encounter with their branch at Ojodu.

Dear All,

GTCO organises its Food & Drink Fair and GTCO Fashion Weekend annually. To promote these events, they regularly send out marketing emails to all their customers. The last Food & Drink Fair, I unsubscribed from their marketing emails by clicking on the link to unsubscribe, but I kept on receiving them daily. Tired of this, I sent a mail to GT Support requesting to be unsubscribed, and they assured me that my request will be treated within 48 hours. After two working days, I got no response. So I thought maybe they just deliberately ignored my request in order to continue to advertise their Food & Drink Fair. I let that go (even though I did not like it.)

Secondly, the GTCO Fashion Weekend, which is even more troubling, promotes indecency and moral decadence amongst ladies. And sometimes, I see their ATM wallpaper advert when I try to withdraw cash, containing a scantlily dressed woman, which I do not like.

So I wrote to them raising my concerns and asked them to address these issues, but they said their Fashion Weekend is to promote the work of local and international designers. I then decided that rather than try to dissuade them from their practices, it is better I close my accounts with them.

On the 18th of May, I visited the branch at Ojodu and wrote a letter requesting a closure of all my accounts. However, they tossed me back and forth saying I had liens (negative balances) that I had to settle. How those negative balances came about, only God knows. Because I do not withdraw overdrafts on any of my accounts, including my dollar account which had a negative balance of $0.04.

So I told them I will pay the negative I am owing them, that they should all be summed up and let me know the full amount. However, they kept tossing me back and forth. They said I owe stamp duty charges of 6.98 on my first savings account, 41.88 on my second savings, and various SMS charges.

My people, how did stamp duty become 6.98 and 41.88? Isn't the official charge for Stamp Duty 50 naira for each 10k and above transaction? This is what angered me the most, that because of their dishonesty, I must close my accounts because I can no longer trust them. Even my dollar account which had a negative balance of $0.04, I requested they convert it to Naira because there is no way I can get $0.04, but they did not listen. They keep tossing me back and forth, and I almost lost my composure and patience. Had I created a scene, they would have brought the police to handcuff me and take me to the station that I am constituting a nuisance in the bank. Only God will judge this bank because what they have done to me is very wrong.

I hope the authorities get to see this and investigate. I will visit them again soon and attempt to close the accounts, and hopefully they accede to my request.

GTBank is one of the worst banks, if not the worst bank in this country. With its so-called architectural masterpiece buildings that appear beautiful outwards, they are like whitewashed tombs full of dead men's bones. Beatiful on the outside. Rotten on the inside.

After clearing the negative balances in two of my accounts, I left 444 in my first savings account for them to nil off whatever else I may be owing (according to them), including the 0.04 dollars. Yet, they charged me SMS charges for January 2026 for my second savings account that I have not used in over two years.

GTB, I may be insignificant, but I pray the authorities see this and investigate.

I just relocate go another sensible, humane, customer friendly bank.
Infact this new bank once booked me for one on one VIDEO call on Google meet, when l had issues with them.
Everything was resolved during that call.

You should have created a scene at the Bank, that's the only way they would have taken you seriously. In 2016 I had some issues with GTbank that stressed me greatly for 1 whole month and I was able to get it resolved by creating a scene and demanding to see the manager.
UIt's a decade now since I stopped banking with them.

GTB alarmed? Not happening. Nothing alarms GTB. They're the Rock of Gibraltar.

I don't know if they're fraudulent, but something I've noticed is that they don't care what you as their customer think of them. I guess they think they have enough customers, so one doesn't matter. But it'll affect them in the long run. Their arrogance will be their undoing.

In all you’ve said, you haven’t told us which bank you’re working for

1. Are you saying you initially wanted to close an account because you don't like how they promote women to wear what they want?
Has anyone ever questioned the decency of what you wear?.. how do you know you don't tempt ladies with your "decent" clothes.

2. Closing a bank account isn't a good look on any branch. That's why they toss you back and forth. They prefer a dormant account than a closed one.

3 The charges are normal, if you want to confirm try zenith bank .. they are all the same just different apps, it's like thinking if you call with airtel you'll somehow be calling at a lower rate, when they are all using very similar tarrif plans

4. If you want a bank who uses well dressed ladies for their advert look for it since that's your preference . I just dey see new types of mental illnesses everyday .

If you have a genuine issue with Gtb, take it to FIJ. they will investigate and call the bank out.

It does not go dormant even if you just stop using the Bank. They will still be sending you mails. I stopped using GTB since 2016 and they still send me mails and monthly bank statements.

Same here, it used to be my main bank for so many years till October 2024.
Received Western union, till today they've denied it after visiting the bank and complaining online multiple times.

If you're 50, try opening the Stanbic Elder Account. No charges at all. All others, I can't say.
