Tech giant Google has quietly rolled out a major redesign of its Workspace app icons, giving Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Meet, Sheets, Slides, and other apps a new “AI inspired” appearance.

Users across Android, iPhone, and web platforms started noticing the changes from May 18.

The new icons now feature softer shapes, rounded edges, and colorful gradients instead of the old flat color style many users were used to.

Gmail now blends red, blue, green, and yellow more smoothly. Google Docs shifted from plain blue to a blue purple gradient. Meet and Chat also dropped the traditional rainbow design for softer glowing colors.

Many tech analysts believe the redesign is part of Google’s larger push into the artificial intelligence era as competition intensifies between companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Meta.

Interestingly, gradient designs are rapidly becoming the dominant visual identity of AI products globally. From ChatGPT to Google Gemini and Adobe AI tools, many platforms now use glowing colors, swirls, sparkles, and blurred gradients to make AI appear more futuristic and approachable.

Mixed reactions have followed online.

Some users praised the redesign for looking cleaner and more modern, while others complained the icons now resemble each other too much and may become harder to identify quickly.

One noticeable update is that Google Sheets and Slides now appear in landscape orientation, matching how most people actually use them.

The redesign comes just before Google I/O 2026, where more AI related announcements are expected.

One thing is becoming increasingly obvious: Artificial intelligence is no longer only changing technology itself. It is now changing the entire visual language of the tech industry.
