If you are seeking university admission in Nigeria, or you just gained admission to study any of these courses, and you are from a humble background, draw closer and hold your ears. Yes, I said hold your ears! Make sure you graduate with a First Class. Second Class Upper and Lower are not options. If you know say you go graduate with 3rd Class, you better use your 100L school fees to start POS business. Except you know that your background is solid, and you can easily start up any trade, project, or business venture, a First Class Is NOT optional; it is highly required. It will open doors for you no matter your course of study. Organizations that sponsor scholarships are not Father Christmas. They look critically at your grades. I have listed the courses below: 1. Public Administration 2. Mass Communication 3. Microbiology 4. Linguistics 5. Zoology 6. Sociology 7. Parasitology and Entomology 8. Psychology 9. Philosophy 10. History or Religious Studies 11. International Relations 12. Political Science 13. Any Nigerian language 14. Anthropology 15. English Someone with a First Class in the courses listed above has access to more opportunities than someone who has 2.1 or 2.2 in a professional course like Law or Engineering. Just face the primary thing wey carry you come school. Nor let anybody whine you say school na scam. Education gives you access to opportunities, and gives you an analytical mind to judge outcomes in a complex society.

In Nigeria, knowledge transfer is secondary to rationing of grades or relating bad experiences from one generation to another. |

CodeTemplar:How do you mean? Can you give a brief insight? |

Rapmoney:Knowledge transfer and advancement are the two main task of the university system. We relegate transfer of knowledge and focus on rationing how many first class can emerge thinking that makes our standard higher compared to elsewhere where many first class are made. Over time, the minds of the awarders of grade and source of knowledge begin to shift towards grade rationing. They present faded notes and see nothing wrong because transfer of knowledge in fullswing will bring about the not-so-desired outcome of many first class. As time goes, it becomes a culture. The uni system is centred around knowledge growth via research and impartation of same, while polytechnics are suppose to complement that with skill acquisition which takes shorter period. As for bad experiences from generation to generation. I have few experiences. A lecturer comes to take us a course in year three and starts complaining about how public schools are more rigorous and all that popular bullshit people pull private schools down with. Thats the first red flag. The issue is this same lecturer(heard he attended UNN) is he gives a faded note/handout with the justification of thats how it was in their time and in public schools. Imagjne a handout of 50 pages with about 25 badly faded pages that almost no one can see what written on them. The justification is that, thats how it was in their time. Am i in school to taste your bad experiences and challenges or to get knowledge? First class emphasis and competition is not being handled healthily by Africans. |

Saying a First Class in Sociology is SUPERIOR to a 2.1 in Law is DELUSIONAL. The courses listed by the OP are some of the MOST USELESS courses anybody can study in Nigeria TODAY. Regardless of what they graduate with. IF you have kids, mentees or siblings looking for admission; this is a perfect list of courses to AVOID. Unless their main target is POVERTY and UNEMPLOYMENT. Also, getting a First Class Degree in English is almost IMPOSSIBLE. I attended a School that's nearly 40 years old and they'd NEVER had a First Class Graduate in their English Department. |

You missed one useless course that I see the students stress themselves so much over for nothing. In my undergraduate days, I had a neighbour that studied the course and this guy was always stressed and sometimes he went to school on Saturday while we were playing football in the lodge. I'm talking about Theater Arts. If you get admission for that course, you better go learn handwork than waste your time. |

The moment I saw Linguistic, I know the op is a joker. My wife graduated with that course few years back from one of the most prestigious universities in Nigeria, OAU. She was only fortunate to be one of about 8 that made 2nd class upper, all others were 2nd class lower and Pass. So where will First Class even come from? |

It's actually difficult to make a first class in some of the courses you mentioned, and this is Nigeria, An International Relations student with a 2.1 can get a job faster than a First Class graduate of Mathematics. |

The time has come where the only thing you need out of school is the ability to read and write. Once you are able to read and write, with the advent of AI and practical apprenticeship and every tech stuffs available, you are good to go. University will become useless soon. |
