Mallori Patrice Strait, a Texas woman, was held in jail for five months after suffering a miscarriage in a fast food restaurant bathroom. While Strait was incarcerated, a local crisis pregnancy center took possession of her fetal remains, named the fetus, and held a public funeral. This act highlights how Texas law and anti-abortion groups have created a climate where women’s personal tragedies are politicized and used to push an agenda that criminalizes reproductive health outcomes. The emotional and psychological toll on women facing miscarriages is only intensified by these public spectacles and legal threats.
Texas laws requiring burial or cremation of fetal remains, even after miscarriage, are not grounded in medical necessity and serve only to further stigmatize and traumatize women. Strait’s ordeal is a chilling reminder of how state policy and law enforcement can turn private grief into public punishment, making Texas a hostile place for anyone who can become pregnant.

Disgraced Texas police officer Matthew Luckhurst was fired by San Antonio PD in 2016 after placing poop on bread and leaving it for a homeless man to eat.
