First of all, Good Morning and Good Day to all our Muslims brothers and sisters. Wednesday, 27th and Thursday, 28th May 2026 has been declared as public holidays in commemoration of the Muslims feast of Eid-El-Kabir. I wish all Muslims a happy celebration. I am a Christian from South South region. I attends Pentecostal Church. In recent times particularly from the administration of Late former President of Nigeria, General Muhammadu Buhari to the current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu have seen different name being used for the Muslims festivities. Take for example, Eid-Ul-Adha the Islamic festival that is commencing today used to be celebrated as Eid-El-Kabir but today it is called Eid-Ul-Adha. Why the name change? Please what is the difference between the name Eid-Ul-Adha and Eid-El-Kabir ? Why are Muslims using different name to mean the same thing?

OP, You are definitely not alone, I sent text to some friends and colleagues, using both captions. But in order to stop confusing myself, I finally restricted myself to writing "barka de sallah". |

wink2015:Eid- ul Adha - Feast of the sacrifice Eid Ul Kabir - The Greater Eid. The first is the real name while the former is just a description of it being more celebrated (Hajj Season falls within it) than the one Muslims celebrates after Ramadan. |

wink2015:The two names refer to the same Islamic celebration, but they come from different different meanings. 1. Eid al-Adha This is the original Arabic name. Eid means festival or celebration Al-Adha means the sacrifice So, Eid al-Adha means: “Festival of Sacrifice” 2. Eid el-Kabir This name is common in West Africa, especially in countries like Nigeria, Senegal, and nearby regions. El/Kabir comes from Arabic “Al-Kabīr” meaning: “The Big” or “The Great” So Eid el-Kabir means: “The Big Eid” or “The Greater Festival” People use this name to distinguish it from Eid al-Fitr, which comes after Ramadan and is often seen as the “smaller Eid.” Allaahu Knows the Best |

Good observation. I can bet most Non-muslim Nigerians didn't even notice anything. Muslims have two major religious celebrations: EID AL FITR (which means festival of the break of fasts) this is after the Ramadan fasts. EID AL ADHA (which means festival of the sacrifice) to commemorate the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim/Abraham. EID AL ADHA is the same as EID AL KABIR. EID AL KABIR means the big festival. It is referred to as such because many consider it as the bigger of the two. But the Islamic (and more correct) name is EID AL ADHA. Hope this answers your question. |

saintneo:Al-Hijra It means: The Migration. It refers to the migration of the prophet Muhammad (saw) and the Muslims from Mecca to Madina due to unbearable persecution of the Muslims by idolaters. Al-Maulud Literally means: The Birth. Actually refers to the birth of Prophet Muhammad (saw) and celebrated as EID AL MAULUD (festival of the birth). Eid al Maulud is a popular celebration in the Muslim world as Islam does not encourage birthday celebration. The two festivals in Islam are as previously stated. |

There is no difference. Eid-ul-Adha and Eid-el-Kabir (also spelled Eid al-Kabir or Id-el-Kabir) are two different names for the exact same Islamic festival. |
